Top Employers Hiring Civil Engineering Graduates

Where Can Civil Engineer Graduates Find Jobs

Malina Debrie
Civil engineers are in high demand yet the supply is far less than the demand. So, when graduating with a degree in engineering, a civil engineer right out of college can almost demand the salary he wants and get it.

Most civil engineer graduates begin working at a salary of $50,000 or above. However, with a GPA of 3.50 or better, a civil engineer graduate can demand salaries upwards into the $100K's.

With the present economy as it has been in the past and is presently, there are specific majors students going into college and those already in college should look at far closer than others. Civil engineering is one of those fields you should consider if you have the ability and an interest in designing, planning, constructing and infrastructures and if you are strong in math, physics and the sciences.

Government Agencies - Civil engineers work with local and state government regional planning boards to design, build and orchestrate roads, highways, bridges and railways to meet the needs of increased urban growth and developments.

Builders and Architects - Working with builders and architects, civil engineers calculate the amount, depth and strength of steel needed in building homes, highways, overpasses, bridges and any and all building projects.

Land Management Firms - Civil engineers work with land management companies to excavate projects either underground or above ground. The expertise of civil engineers is required to accomplish land renewal projects, develop underground transit and transfer systems, design tunneling for underground roadways. Civil engineers work to guarantee the underground substratum can sustain the pressure from above ground people and new buildings.

Water, Gas and Electrical Utility Companies - Civil engineers focus on designing plans to initiate underground pipeline routes transferring water, gas and electrical power from plants to neighborhoods and communities, business or farms while guaranteeing the preservation of waterways. Civil engineers also design dams to generate electrical power for new project implementation in addition to creating new sources of power.

Waste Water Facilities - Civil Engineers design methods to dispose of industrial, animal and human waste transferring treated waste water from one location to another and after treatment guaranteeing the flow back into approved waterways. In addition, they are focused on developing sewage treatment plant plans to safely remove waste eliminating septic tank systems from use.

Environmental Regulation Agencies - As our government becomes more and more aware of climate changes, engineers are in high demand working to develop and initiate ways to reduce harmful industrial output and emissions from factories and municipal plants. With a focus on developing improved distribution and transportation systems, civil engineering is the catalyst upon which modern infrastructure depends. Their focus is in preventing harmful amounts of chemicals from seeping into the soil causing contamination to humans, plants and animals.

Architectural Firms - Building is all about designs, constructing and working closely with engineers. An architect draws building plans, an engineer comes behind, analyzes the plans guaranteeing the plans are structurally sound and safe. The engineers job in other words is to make sure all construction will stand firm, will not collapse or cave in, will withstand a certain amount of wind speed, weight load, even earthquake load. The civil engineers job is to guarantee that structures can withstand an estimated amount of weight and will not collapse.

The son of a friend of mine graduated in New York with a degree in Architecture 2 years ago, and he is still struggling to find a decent job. IT used to be a great profession 20 years ago, but you are lucky to be able to earn 100K these days. After 30 years in the business, I am currently earning less than I did 20 years ago, and that's well below 100K unfortunately.

Right now I am a part time sanitation engineer...and working on a masters! Thanks. Well done.

It's interesting to hear there is some field out there that remains popular in these times. My advice for younger ones is to learn a trade. It is useful, in demand, and you feel good about yourself. I wish I had such talents.
