When visiting New York City it is often recommended to stay outside of the city and travel in. A decent hotel in the city can run upwards of a couple hundred dollars a night for a family outing. If you are looking for a vacation to the city or even just to get away from big city life I suggest you check out Danbury. With its small town feel and adorable old buildings on Main Street this city offers several creature comforts at an affordable price. When staying in Danbury there are three excellent choices in hotels for you and the family.
1.) Ethan Allen Hotel - Located at 21 Lake Avenue Extension, this fun hotel is decked out in Ethan Allen furniture and offers several accommodations. High speed internet access is included and you'll find typical items in your room such as a coffee maker, iron, and desks. The King Suite is recommended for children as there is ample space for a living room type setup that includes a pull-out couch. The mattress on the bed is a quality Ethan Allen Supreme Comfort mattress which will guarantee a solid night's sleep. The best part about this hotel is the affordable price of $119. You may be able to get a promotional discount during special times but AARP and AAA are standard discounts if you are a member.
2.) Danbury Plaza - Located at 18 Old Road Danbury just a mere 50 miles from New York City. At this hotel you will find a heated indoor pool along with a small fitness center. High speed internet access is available. The double double room runs a cool $89 dollars a night without discounts; both AARP and AAA are accepted. There is a free continental breakfast and a discount if you are a government employee. One thing that sets this hotel apart from others is that Danbury Plaza is a pet friendly hotel so you can bring along spike to entertain the kids.
3.) Hampton Inn Danbury - Located at 81 Newtown Road. This option is more of a chain hotel that you see on TV but still the value is there. For $100 a night you can get the family poolside package that includes two double beds in the room. The rooms are not as nice as the other two options that I mentioned above. There is high speed internet access but that's about it. The kids will be happy with the pool and the convenience is still there by being less than an hour from the city.
Once you choose a hotel for the family you can enter New York City via bus, train, or car. If possible I would recommend staying at least one day in Danbury. There are a few museums floating around and several buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. Walking down Main Street can consume an afternoon and the kids should get a kick out of the old time feel.
