Top Five Atlantis Resort Waterslides in Paradise Island, Bahamas

Rochelle Connery
Atlantis Casino and Resort on Paradise Island, Bahamas is home to the most daring waterslides you'll ever encounter. Try beating a clear waterslide surrounded with sharks! But perhaps the best part is its location. Paradise Island is just what its name claims: absolutely tropical paradise. It's the material of pictures and dreams, and as a huge fan of the resort, I can't help but recommend you try it out for yourself.

Atlantis Resort's waterslide area is called Aquaventure. There are two slide sections in Aquaventure: The Mayan Temple and the Power Tower. The Mayan Temple looks just like the Mayan structures built several hundred years ago. The Power Tower is a dark, imposing, several-story structure resembling a crypt for a Mayan king's tomb.

If you're fortunate enough to visit Atlantis, don't miss these top five waterslides!

Mayan Temple: Leap of Faith

The Mayan Temple Leap of Faith is perhaps the most popular waterslide in the world. Most Bahamian travel catalogs and websites feature a daunting photographs of this Mayan Temple structure's plunging waterslide. Ever wondered what was at the bottom? A pool of sharks. Slide down the near-vertical drop under a clear acrylic arch, the only thing separating you from these sharp-toothed predators.

A note to visitors: As soon as you arrive at Atlantis, go on this slide. We missed out because they closed it for several days of repairs the day after we arrived. Thankfully they didn't close the Power Tower slides, too, or we'd have really been bummed out.

Mayan Temple: Challenger Slides

The opposite side of the Mayan Temple features two identical side-by-side slides with timers at the top for slide races. That's right. You and a friend or family member can race each other down these steep slides and set the record straight for who's the speed leader. Of course, you don't get anything for winning, but I guarantee you'll alight the slide with a beaming smile spread across your face.

Power Tower: The Abyss

My personal favorite ride is The Abyss. Face your worst fears of height and darkness combined as you cross your arms and legs in preparation for the biggest body drop of your life. The mouth of the slide swallows you into a pit of darkness the second you release your body into the depths. Before you know it, you're falling down a slick dark hole, washing beneath a daylight walkway and dumping out into an underground cavern with a waterfall. Believe me, the minute the fun stops, you're trekking back up the Power Tower for more of the same!

Power Tower: The Surge

This one or two-person tube ride takes you on a fast trip around twists and turns through dark and light sections of this slide. Parts of this ride go so fast, you almost feel as though you're on a roller coaster. Most of the slide is open, so you can look around and enjoy the tropical view as you ride.

Power Tower: The Falls

Similar to the Surge, the Falls accommodates one or two-person tubes in an outdoor water roller-coaster style ride. Though not as fast as the Surge, this ride is still fun and provides an even better opportunity to view Atlantis grounds from several feet in the air. This one's perfect for families with small or medium-size children who aren't as fond of the daring body slides.

Always, always, always apply a healthy dose of sunscreen before embarking on Aquaventure rides. A lazy river leads up to the Falls, for instance, and that can take up to forty-five minutes to complete if it's busy. You're literally left out to bake in the sun, so try not to take this ride in the heat of the day.
