Top Five Auto Racing Tracks with the Most History

Aaron Smith
Auto racing is a sport that has gained a large amount of popularity in the last few years as NASCAR has become one of the most popular sports in our country, but the sport is wide reaching and has a whole lot of history. Auto racing fans are known for their loyalty and it's for good reason. At many races, fans will come and camp at the speedway for several days before the race and make it into a week long vacation. Many auto racing fans consider going to a race an absolute privilege. Let's take a look at the five tracks in the United States that have the most history and command high dollars on race day for a ticket.

Top Five Tracks

1. Indianapolis, The Brickyard- Sorry Daytona, but there is no doubt that Indy deserves the spot at the top of the list. The Indianapolis 500 has been a staple of the auto racing world since 1911 and recently the Brickyard 400 has become arguably the most popular race on NASCAR's circuit as well. The legends that have driven at Indianapolis are second to none and that little column of bricks on the track right before the flag stand still looks amazing!

2. Daytona- The Daytona 500 is probably the most notable NASCAR race of the year and its prestige is second to none in the NASCAR world. Every driver wants to win the Daytona 500 very badly. The restrictor plate racing at Daytona can lead to some incredible finishes and there are often last lap passes for the win, which the fans love to see.

3. Bristol- The tiny 1/2 mile concrete racetrack is known for its tough racing and its ability to get a driver's temper to boil over. The banking here is extremely high, making this a very fast short track. In fact, the drivers make a lap here in less than 16 seconds, so don't blink your eyes too often or you'll miss something. The track packs in upwards of 160,000 screaming fans and it always lives up to its nickname of Thunder Valley.

4. Darlington- Darlington Raceway is known by many drivers as the track that is too tough to tame. I think that is why it is such a popular track among drivers and the fans, because it is a very difficult track for even the best of the drivers. The track is an egg shaped oval with about 25 degrees of banking. The track is not forgiving to drivers that make mistakes, so perfection is a must!

5. Atlanta- Atlanta Motor Speedway is an interesting track because on the surface it looks like it may be a typical "cookie cutter" 1.5 mile track, but it definitely is not. The track is very demanding on drivers and the speeds here are very high, even in the corners where drivers are often wide open. The track lends itself to photo finishes, which always pleases the fans.

These five tracks stand out above the rest as far as having the most auto racing history associated with them. The tickets at these tracks don't come easy, so expect to pay up when you go!
