Top Five Basketball Dynasties of All Time

Aaron Smith
In the game of basketball, a dynasty occurs when a team with a large amount of talent and athletic ability stays together for a long period of time and continues to dominate its opponents. Dynasties aren't easy to come by because a team will always have to fight through adversity such as injuries and losses of certain players. The other thing to remember is, these teams took their opponents best shot every night because they were wanting to knock off the best of the best.

Top Five Basketball Dynasties of all time

1. Boston Celtics- 1960's- Between 1957 and 1969 the Boston Celtics created a dynasty that is tough for anyone to top. The Celtics won the NBA championship a staggering 10 out of 12 years in this time period. The legendary Red Auerbach coached the team through 1966, before Bill Russell became a player coach. Russell was the fortress of the team, but John Havlicek, Bob Cousy, and K.C. Jones made huge impressions on the game as well. In fact, Auerbach called Havlicek the guts of the team after Cousy retired.

2. UCLA Bruins- 1963-1975- With John Wooden at the helm the UCLA Bruins created college basketball's top dynasty. In fact, the Bruins were the greatest dynasty in all of college sports. Between 1963 and 1975 the Bruins won the NCAA Championship 10 of 12 years and had a record winning streak of an amazing 88 games in a row. Lew Alcindor, Gail Goodrich, and Bill Walton take turns starring throughout the period as the Bruins were an unstoppable force.

3. Chicago Bulls- 1990's- Michael Jordan is certainly the best basketball player of all time and he led the Bulls to six championships, missing only two years when Jordan temporarily retired. Many, including myself, believe the Bulls would have won eight titles in a row were it not for Jordan's retirement when the Rockets won two titles. Jordan and Scottie Pippen formed an amazing duo that opponents never found a way to stop.

4. Los Angeles Lakers- 1980's- The Lakers dynasty began with the pick of Magic Johnson. The "Showtime era" included Johnson and players such as an aging Kareem Abdul Jabaar, Michael Cooper, and James Worthy. The Lakers had an arch rival in the Boston Celtics, but the Lakers won a total of five titles with Magic Johnson, including three in a row from 1986-1988.

5. Minneapolis Lakers- Early 1950's- A sometimes forgotten dynasty was that of the early Minneapolis Lakers. George Mikan led the team to five titles in six years and three consecutive titles. Mikan revolutionized the center position and the Lakers became the team with the target on their chest very quickly.

Those are the top five dynasties in the history of basketball in my humble opinion. There are others that are close, and there are teams now that are capable of making a run at this list, so stay tuned!
