What do you think of when you hear of San Diego? The sunshine! This is what makes this city so unique from all the rest of the cities in this country. What better way to celebrate your child's next birthday party than the outdoors. From aquariums to horse ranches, San Diego has many places to choose from.

The Chula Vista Nature Center located in south county features exotic plants and animals native to the area. You will discover sea turtles, sea horses, the American bald eagle and much more! You can reserve a private room for your child's birthday for the cost of $100 or $80 if you're a member. The cost includes arts and crafts, cups, plates, napkins, forks, and critter chit chat with the nature center's animals! The last time I went to visit the "critter" was a beautiful hawk that was found alongside a freeway up in Los Angeles. The trainer explains the background of the animal to the children making it an informational and fun experience. The nature center's address is 1000 Gunpowder Point Drive, Chula Vista, CA 91910. Call (619) 409-5905 for reservations.

Pepper Grove in Balboa Park offers visitors a scenic area with fun-filled activities nearby. For those familiar with the museums at Balboa Park, Pepper Grove is located just south of the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center. This would be a great birthday party for those who have a child who has a small number of friends. A great planning strategy would be to invite his or her closest friends for the field trip to the museum then afterwards have a family picnic at Pepper Grove. Call (619) 235-1169 for reservations.

Cheyenne Arabians & Miniatures in Ramona offers birthday packages for those who enjoy horse-riding. These packages include pinatas, balloons, 1 hour pony rides, a petting zoo and much more. You can also choose between a themed and a non-themed party. The themed party includes My Little Pony, horse, unicorn and farm animal. Their website is very specific and will note that you must supply your own cake, snacks and beverages. Call (760) 788-3780 for more information.

Ice Town on La Jolla Village Dr. (UTC Mall) is perfect for mall lovers and ice skaters. What child doesn't love to ice skate...and shop? It's perfectly located next to the food court and you can ask the facility to reserve either private or semi-private birthday party for your child. There is also a sport called Broomball that you can reserve your party for. It's very similar to hockey. The only difference is you wear shoes, use a ball and a broom. And that's it! If you've ever been to this mall, you know how beautiful the landscaping is. It's serene for the parents and fun-filled for the kids. Call (858)452-9110 ext. 14 for reservations.

This might be unusual for many but IKEA has a new promotion. On the first Tuesday of every month during the hours of 4pm and 6pm, IKEA is hosting a FREE birthday party. The catch is not only those two hours but your child must also be turning 10 years or older in order to eligible. They are also only allowed to invite two of their friends. The perks are wonderful. Aside from the event being complimentary, it includes a magic show, the cake and soda. Your child will also receive a gift. The event takes place at the IKEA San Diego restaurant on the second floor at 2149 Fenton Parkway. Call (619) 283-6166 ext. 1330 for reservations.
