Top Five Blankets for Your Horse

Eleanthe Anderson
While the topic of blanketing horses is often debated, the fact of the matter is that there are times when blanketing is necessary. You might do so to protect your horse while it acclimates to a colder environment, to protect it from flies or rain, or to keep it clean while preparing for a showing or event. Whatever your reasons, whether they are for health or grooming, it is important to choose a high quality horse blanket. My two favorite horse clothing manufacturers are Rambo Quarterhorse and Weatherbeeta. These two companies offer the highest quality materials, selection, and products, and can make custom horse blankets for you if necessary. Let's look at the favorites from Rambo first.

At the moment, my favorite horse blanked is a new product that just became available. It is the Velour Cooler Blanket. It is made from high quality fleece and has a velvet finish. By velvet finish, I mean that it looks like you have draped your horse in velvet. It is absolutely stunning against your horse's fur. It is not just for looks though. Like any quality horse blanket, this one wicks moisture away from the horse's body, towards the exterior of the blanket where it can evaporate.

My second favorite horse blanket from Rambo is the Stable Blanket. This is an all-purpose blanket designed to provide warmth. This blanket stands apart from others in its class because it is made with a special thermo-bonded fiber-fill. This filler is designed to return to its original shape after compression, which means that no matter how much your horse lays down on it, it will stay fluffy. This preserves the air circulation within the blanket, which is an important feature in regulating your horse's body temperature.

My final favorite from Rambo Quarterhourse is the Waterproof Horse Blanket. Their version is made from ballistic nylon. They don't claim to be bullet-proofing your horse, but the nylon is one hundred times stronger than similar polyester materials. The interior of the blanket is lined, which helps to keep the horse's coat polished.

Now let's look at some favorites from Weatherbeeta. I really like the Scrim Sheet that they have designed. It is a brand new product that designed to keep your horse clean before a showing or other special event. The blanket is made from an acrylic mesh, and it comes in small, medium, and large sizes. It has lined shoulders, so it does not interfere with your horse's grooming, and has a single front closure.

My final favorite is for foals, and it is the Weatherbeeta Newborn Blanket. This is designed to keep newborns warm, and adjusts from twenty-eight to forty-two inches. This allows it to be worn as your foal grows into its adolescence. It comes in a single pattern of blue and green plaid, which is very attractive.

These are my personal favorites if you are thinking about outfitting your horse with some new blankets. These selections might be a little more costly than the other products on the market, but they are of the highest quality. Don't worry - your horse is worth it!
