Top Five Bowl Games with the Most Tradition

Aaron Smith
College football has grown by leaps and bounds over the years and the bowl schedule has grown to a stunning 34 games as of this season. Many of these games have very little historical traditions, but there are some bowls that stand out as having a tremendous amount of tradition attached to them. Which are the top five bowls from a historical standpoint?

Top Five Bowls based on tradition

5. Gator Bowl- The game doesn't have the top notch teams in it now, but they still have pretty good competition here. This game has been played in Jacksonville Florida since 1946. The Gator Bowl currently selects an ACC team and then selects an at large team from another conference. Since the ACC has been down in football that has hurt this game some, but there is still quite a bit of tradition.

4. Peach Bowl (Chick-fil-A Bowl)- The Peach Bowl is now called the Chick-fil-A Bowl, but the tradition still runs deep in this game at the Georgia Dome. The game has always brought the fans, boasting the best attendance rate of any non BCS game and the game has been sold out 11 straight years. The match up is always a very good one, and this year will be no different with the home team from Georgia Tech taking on LSU.

3. Cotton Bowl- The Cotton Bowl has been played ever year since 1937 at its namesake stadium in Dallas. The game isn't quite what it used to be as far as having national title implications, but the match up between the SEC and the Big 12 still commands plenty of attention for this game.

2. Orange Bowl- The Orange Bowl has been played in south Florida since 1935 and it has always been one of the biggest. It is the stage for the national title every few years now with the BCS, and it still has one of the best parades going.

1. Rose Bowl- This one isn't called the grand daddy of them all for no reason. The Rose Bowl takes a back seat to no one. This game has been played since 1902 and has featured 28 national champions through the years. The classic match ups between teams like USC and Ohio State have gone down in history as some of the best ever. The Tournament of Roses Parade is bar none the best of the New Year's Day Parades as well. The Rose Bowl is tops all the way around.

There may be some movement in the coming years as the Cotton Bowl slides some and some others such as the Sugar and Fiesta Bowls begin to rise each year.

The Rose Bowl is definitely the biggest of them all. I see the Sugar taking over the Cotton. The Fiesta is still a little new, but they have a whole laundry list of activities surrounding the game.
