Top Five Coaches in College Basketball Today

Aaron Smith
College basketball is just about set to begin once again. These next few months will lead us up to another exciting month of March Madness that will finish off another great season of college basketball. Going into the season and based on their past performances, who are the top coaches in all of college basketball? This is a list that changes constantly, but here are my top five going into this season.

Top Five college basketball coaches

1. Mike Kryzewski (Duke)- Yes Duke has been down a little bit in the last couple of years, but it is very hard to argue that any other active college basketball coach should be ranked above Coach K. He has 10 ACC Titles at Duke and 3 National Titles, including back to back titles in the 90's. Duke has done an amazing job maximizing the talent they get and making their players play inside their system.

2. Roy Williams (North Carolina)- Not surprising that the top two would be Duke and UNC, but it's for good reason. Williams has an over 80% winning percentage in his coaching career and his teams seem to always rise to the top even when they are extremely young and inexperienced. Williams finally got his NCAA Title in 2005 and his Tar Heels are loaded going into 2008-2009.

3. Billy Donovan (Florida)- While Donovan is far younger than the others on this list, no one can argue with the sucess he has had in the head coaching position at Florida. After losing in the title game in 2000, Donovan won back to back titles in 2006 and 2007 with Florida. He has proven to be a great recruiter and a coach that gets the most out of his players.

4. Jim Calhoun (UConn)- Calhoun's teams are good every single year and that is a testament to his coaching prowess. He has lots of players who have excelled at the professional level as well, which speaks well of his development of players.

5. Rick Pitino (Louisville)- Pitino has been successful everywhere he has gone in the college game. He had success at Providence, had even more success at Kentucky, and is now starting to have a lot of success at Louisville. Pitino's teams seem to peak at just the right time every year, and no coach wants to play them in the tournament.

Who do you think the top coaches in college basketball are? Keep an eye on some other young coaches that could rise into this list in the next few years.

    Steve,

I considered Izzo for #5... but just not quite... very good coach.. I think Ryan has some more to prove... no national titles and no championship appearances.

Where is Bo Ryan? Even Tom Izzo?

Let me break it down for you:

Coach K DOOK (Duke is spelled DOOK in Chapel Hill), has been an early NCAA exit for nearly one decade. His DOOK squad that was clearly superior lost in that epic Championship game to Rip Hamilton and UCONN. Also, Coach K's players are woefully unprepared for the NBA. The only non-bust out of DOOK's recent crop is Boozer.

You forgot about Bill Self, who admittedly out coached Roy Williams in the Final 4.

Also, Ben Howland. 3 straight Final 4 appearances at UCLA. Before that, his Pittsburgh clubs were always competitive, even with lesser talent.

    UNC 02 Alum.

    I can't stand you already.
