Top Five Upsets in College Football History
5. Stanford Defeats USC 24-23 in 2007- Let's face it, this Stanford team had absolutely no business coming even close to defeating the might USC Trojans. The Cardinal were massive 41 point underdogs and USC was a national title favorite. Jim Harbaugh's group ended up coming into Los Angeles and shocking the world.
4. Holy Cross Defeats Boston College 55-12 in 1942- The Boston College Eagles were national title favorites and they were 8-0 going into this game. Holy Cross was a .500 team that had seemingly no chance. Boston College had allowed just 19 points in their first 8 games of the season. The Eagles not only lost, they were trounced in one of most confusing games ever.
3. Temple Defeats Virginia Tech 28-24 in 1998- The Temple Owls were the laughing stock of college football in the 1990's. The average season for the Owls was a 0-10 year. Virginia Tech came into this game ranked fifth in the country and playing at home in Blacksburg, where they almost never lose. Temple trailed by 17 at halftime, but rallied and stunned the Hokies.
2. Carnegie Tech over Notre Dame 19-0 in 1926- Knute Rockne was a legendary coach at Notre Dame, but this was his lowest point. Amazingly, Rockne was so sure his team would win this game that he didn't even come to the game! He decided to go be a spectator at the Army vs. Navy game instead. Notre Dame didn't even get on the board, and their national title hopes were dashed.
1. Appalachian State Defeats Michigan 34-27 in 2007- Some thought this was Michigan's best team in quite some time. Mike Hart, Chad Henne, Jake Long, and the entire team was shocked by the Mountaineers from Appalachian State. The 1 AA team was great for their size, but no one gave them a chance in this one. This loss really turned the Wolverines 2007 season into a downward spiral.
