Top Five Employer Responsibilities

What Employers Need to Do to Be Successful

Employers have many responsibilities that they have to deal with on a regular basis. However, the top five responsibilities that they have regard their employees. Small businesses that have employees will need to master these responsibilities to ensure that their company is sustainable, safe and secure.

#1 - Create a Safe Work Environment

The first responsibility that an employer has is to create a safe work environment for their employees. To have a safe work environment the employer will need to look at both the physical and emotional aspects of the work environment. Physically the work environment needs to be set up so that hazards like loud noises and toxic components are minimized through safety equipment or the design of the work environment. Employers also need to focus on minimizing hostility in their company, particularly between employees and between managers and employees.

#2 - Create a Sustainable Business

The sustainability of a business impacts many aspects of a company, and in particular it impacts employees. Employees are going to be impacted by fluctuations in the company's work load and by its stability. When a company is stable and sustainable employees do not have to worry about losing their jobs because of the company's financial problems. This allows them to focus on doing their jobs. When a company is not stable or sustainable then employees are under constant strain. This impacts their productivity, their moods and their efficiency.

#3 - Provide Employees with the Ability to Evolve as Professionals

Another responsibility that employers have is to provide their employees with the chance to evolve as a professional. Employees that are stuck in one role without the opportunity to advance or evolve as a professional have a tendency to get bored and frustrated with their lack of opportunities. This is a dangerous situation for employers as both of these things can lead to a lack of employee loyalty and high turnover rates.

#4 - Maintain Ethical Business Practices

Ethical businesses practices are critical to a sustainable business and to positive relationships with employees. Ethical business practices provide employees with confidence that their employer is going to deal with them fairly and that they are going to act in the best interests of the employees and their customers. Companies with poor ethical business practices often end up in court because of harassment and employment practice based lawsuits.

#5 - Recognize Employee Contributions

The foundation of any business is the contributions made by its various employees. Every position is important from the cleaning staff to the executives. Since the success of a company is based on the contributions made by staff members employers need to recognize their employees' contributions verbally and with other types of rewards.
