Top Five Guitar Albums of 2010

Standards, Blues, Eclectic Pop, Shred, and Guitar Mastery

Mike Spain
2010 was a great year for fans of guitar music. My picks for the top five guitar albums of 2010 include all-time greats Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Buddy Guy. It also includes Swedish shred master Yngwie Malmsteen and Steve Morse's latest project "Angel Fire." Standards, blues, eclectic pop, shred, and guitar mastery is shown in my selections.

Eric Clapton "Clapton"

Eric Clapton rewarded his fans in 2010 with a self titled album "Clapton." The album is mostly covers of blues and standards. The album sets the standard in 2010. Eric Clapton is a great guitarist who surrounds himself with incredible musical talent. The guests on this album included JJ Cale, Steve Winwood, Sheryl Crow, Derek Trucks, Wynton Marsalis, and Allen Toussaint. Well produced, well done, missing a standout, album of great music a Clapton fan would expect.

Jeff Beck "Emotion & Commotion"

Jeff Beck does a mix of covers and originals on his latest album "Emotion & Commotion." However, when Jeff Beck does a cover he makes the selection his own. His guitar playing is his fingerprint on the selection. Most surprisingly guests provide vocals on four of the albums ten tracks. Joss Stone appears on half of them. The talented Imelda May adds her talents on "Lilac Wine." Olivia Safe appears on the albums final track "Elegy for Dunkirk ."

Buddy Guy "Living Proof"

The oldest guitarist on this list is Buddy Guy. In 2010 Buddy gave us an album of twelve blues tracks and his guitar just smokes. The album is highlighted with appearances by Carlos Santana and B.B. King. Guy shows age is just a number when it comes to guitar playing. Probably the best blues album of 2010 by one of the best blues guitarists of all time.

Angelfire

Probably the best guitar album from a group you have never heard before. The guitar work is provided by Steve Morse of the Steve Morse Group, Deep Purple, The Dixie Dregs, and Kansas . The vocals are provided by Sarah Spencer. The results of the collaboration are a fantastic album of angelic vocals pushing Steve's virtuoso guitar playing in new settings.

Yngwie Malmsteen "Relentless"

Yngwie Malmsteen returned in 2010 with a hard rocking album of his "neo-classical" shredding. The album features the vocals of Tim Owens from Judas Priest.
