Top Five Haircolor Options for Grey or Greying Hair

Dallas Bolen
There are literally hundreds of home hair coloring products on the market. The funny thing is that over the course of my lifetime, I have tried at least half of them. Here are what I consider to be the five best products to cover that infamous sign of aging in the comfort of your own home.

First, let us start with the guys. Just For Men haircolor works in just 5 minutes, and is great for that no-fuss mentality in men. If you prefer a more "distinguished", or natural look, the Just For Men line of Touch of Grey products provide a more gradual color change. The website www.justformen.com even provides a how-to demonstration and a free trial offer.

Nice and Easy by Clairol has been a mainstay in the battle against grey. With their newest line, GRey Solution, you now have a coloring option that softens course, grey hair. This enhances the ability of the hair shaft so that it can "grab" more of the color. www.clairol.com has instructions for use, where to buy, and even some great professional tips and tricks thrown into the mix.

Excellence Creme haircolor by L'oreal Paris provides 100% grey coverage in 44 shades. The after color conditioner smells great, it also leaves your hair soft and shiny for days after you color. www.lorealparisusa.com has all the instrucions for use, as well as all of the available shades. This website alsor offers a $1.00 off coupon.

If you are blonde or want a more subtle blending of grey, highlights are just the thing that you need. Hi-Light Styliste, also by L'oreal Paris, offers 5 shades that will disguise grey, especially in lighter colored hair. Hi-Light Styliste offers two highlighting brushes for either a dramatic, or a more subtle look. This is also a brand that includes an excellent after color conditioner. Check out the expert tips on www.lorealparisusa.com to help achieve perfect highlights.
If you are afraid to commit to a long-term haircolor, there are many brands that offer temporary haircolor options. Perfect !0 by Clairol has 24 designer shades, takes only ten minutes, and lasts up to 60 days. See www.clairol.com for more information and special offers.

Noelle, Grey Solution is your best bet for a single process, if you still don't get the desired results, consider lightening your hair before you use one of the options above. The trick is to allow the grey to grab as much color as possible. If you lighten before you color, this opens up the hair shaft to more readily accept the color.

Hi there, any tips on covering really stubborn greys? Thanks!

    D. Luckins, that little scent pack in herbal essence hair color could be your problem. Just remember to always do a test patch before coloring.

Thanks! I used to use Loving Care, but it has recently become hard to find. I tried Herbal Essences, but I was so extremely allergic to it that I had to stop. So, I don't use anything by Clairol anymore.

Alisha, Clairol Jazzing demi-permanent haircolor in Icicle should do the trick.

Do you know of any solutions for someone who has blonde hair and is going silver and would like to emphasize and expand the silver?

    Thanks for the information!

Good Stuff. I am a L'oreal Excellence gal myself. Everytime I stray, and try something new, I go running back the next month. I am going to have to look for Hi-Lite Styliste. Thanks for the tip!

This article was so helpful for me. I feel like every month I try a new color only to recolor 2 or 3 weeks later due to gray roots. I am definitely going to try some of your suggestions. Great idea for an article and very helpful.

Thanks for the info! I agree that blond helps hide the grey better.
