Top Five Healthy Food Impostors: Healthy Foods that Aren't

R. Bourne, Ph.D.
We are constantly being reminded about the dangers of the food we eat everyday. In the past, it was eggs; today it is sugar, tomorrow who knows. Our modern food diet, full of trans-fats and high-fructose corn syrup, is constantly being demonized to warn about the latent dangers of our food supply. So, we turn to the so called "healthy foods" is attempt to overcome the perils of our day-to-day diet. However, as you shall see in a minute these "healthy foods or super-foods as they are also being called are just not so healthy. Here is a list of the top five healthy food impostors: healthy foods that aren't.

Top five healthy food impostors 1: salmon
Yes, Salmon. This is touted as one of the healthier foods on earth. But, is it? When you buy salmon you probably are buying farm raised salmon. This type of salmon is raised in crowded jails, fed grain flours and fishmeal, and millions of units of antibiotics. So, you see is not that healthy. On the contrary, the wild fish is indeed a health food, but it is not so easy to find and is more expensive.

Top five healthy food impostors 2: granola
These are just a big marketing fraud. They have led us to believe that these are healthy food. Look at the labels. They are just full loaded sugary non-healthy candies for grown-ups. Want something healthy: take raw oats, almonds, and raisins and mix it with organic molasses. You are better off!

Top five healthy food impostors 3: cereals
We were grown with the believe that cereals were good for us. A healthy breakfast was and is at the center of the good nutrition debate. However, the majority of breakfast cereals are Most are loaded with sugar.

Top five healthy food impostors 4: egg-white omelette
The healthiest components of foods are not precisely non-colored. They are usually highly colored (green, yellow, orange, red, etc). The yolk contains lutein and xeazanthin, all healthy food components. I think you are better off with whole eggs despite the "extra" cholesterol.

Top five healthy food impostors 5: apple juice

Perhaps the problem here is the famous tale of "an apple a day keeps the doctor away." But an apple juice serving is not the same as a serving of the real apple fruit. Apple juice has no fiber and is just sugary water with apple flavor. Please, eat raw apples.

So what you should do? Eat whole fruits (not the processed juices), eat whole eggs not whites only. Eat any animal that roam around to eat (grass-fed cows, old-fashioned grown chickens), and all the fresh colored (organic if you can) fruits and vegetables you can find.
