Top Five Home Improvement Projects for Warm Weather

Pat Bartels
In the South warm weather has arrived. When spring rolls around it's time to start thinking about the things that need to be done around the house. It's really best to start any outdoor projects first to get them out of the way. No one wants to be working outside in the summer heat.

1. Gardening

With the cost of everything going up many people have turned to vegetable gardening. Spring is a good time to get that project going. How early you can start this kind of a project will all depend on where you live. Here in the south the stores are bursting with everything you need to begin your project.

Choose your favorite vegetables, buy some organic fertilizer, some top soil, and more than likely you will need to till your soil. You will also need to be sure that there is an easy way to water your garden.

Two things happen when you choose to have a garden. You end up with delicious yummy vegetables, and you give yourself some good exercise. Who could ask for more?

2. Pressure Wash the Outside of Your Home

Now there are several ways that you can accomplish this task. The easiest way is to hire someone to do this job. If you're handy and your house is not too large in size, you can do it yourself. You can either purchase a pressure washer, borrow one, or rent one.

Just be sure that you practice using your pressure washer on a surface that you can't damage to begin with. Pressure washing can definitely remove paint, and even put a hole in wood. So whatever you do, be sure to select the correct spray nozzle to use.

It's great to get the outside of the house and windows clean. While you're at it do some touch up painting as well. A well maintained house is a happy house.

3. Heating and Air Systems Check

Let's move to the inside of the house. Well kind of inside. Many heating and air components are located on the interior of the home. It's time to get the air conditioning system a checkup. The best thing to do is to call someone who can give your heating and air equipment a thorough check. All too often the cooling system will fail on the hottest day of the year. Many times a yearly maintenance check can help prevent costlier repairs. Also check all your filters and change them.

Where we live in the south there is a tremendous amount of pollen that is floating around in the air during spring. I like to wait for that to subside before I change out my furnace filters. It's nice to start the summer with a clean slate so to speak.

4. Clean Carpets

This is also another job that you can do yourself if you choose. If there is a lot of carpeting in the house, it might be a less costlier way to go. You can purchase a good carpet cleaner for around $180. I personally like this option. That way I can clean carpet whenever I like.

I'm lucky because my husband helps with moving the furniture. I probably wouldn't be able to do it on my own, or it would take me a lot longer to accomplish the task . Although, a carpet cleaning service is just a phone call away.

5. Painting

No one said that maintaining a home was an easy task. Too me all the previous projects are necessary, and so is painting. I like to protect my investment. If you keep a well maintained home, it will save you time and money in the long run.

Painting is one of those necessities that doesn't need to be done every year, but if you're like me things can get a little boring with the home decor. It's a project that can give a lot of satisfaction, and is an inexpensive way to spruce up the home interior. Besides when you're done you can go shopping for new accessories, and that's always fun.

You might think that these are kind of big projects, but many of them can be accomplished in a few weekends. I like to purchase everything I'm going to need during the week, because this time of year the home improvement stores are jammed on the weekends. I hate waiting in lines, and dealing with crowds. Well what are you waiting for? Roll up your sleeves and get going.

I'm a teensy bit jealous that you have spring weather as we got about 6 more inches of snow here yesterday. :) I have some projects on this list that must be done this year.
