Top Five Missed Calls in Basketball

In any sport that has a referee or an official, one has to understand that they are human and they will make mistakes. In the game of basketball, the referees are critically important to how the game goes. Blown calls by the referees are extremely crucial in the outcome of the game. The referees certainly can make or break a game if they perform poorly. The best referees are those who you do not notice throughout the game. What are some of the most common missed calls in basketball? I've compiled a list of the frequently missed violations.

Top five missed calls in basketball

1. Carrying the basketball- Let's face it, an official could call carrying the basketball on just about everyone on the court during the game, but it is rarely ever called. Almost everyone dribbles by turning the ball over and not always having their palms facing the floor as the official rules state that you need to do. In recent years the officials have started calling this some on the most obvious violations, but it still occurs constantly without being called.

2. Traveling- This is obviously the most prominent in the NBA, but it also occurs all the way down to high school basketball as well. Officials have begun to allow players to travel with the basketball, especially if they are about to score the basketball. The jump stop is a terrific basketball move, but many players now take a couple steps and then jump stop, which should be traveling, but its almost never called.

3. Over the back- When someone is in good position to get a rebound, it is very to get around them, which is why you'll often see people go through over them. Over the back is certainly called some, but I think quite a few players get away with this one a lot more than they should. The innocent little shove in the back can be the difference between a defensive rebound and a slam dunk put back.

4. Using the off arm or hand- Of the five on this list, this one has probably moved up the list quickest in the last couple of years. More and more players are using their off hand to ward off the defender as they dribble the ball, or using the off arm as they start to make a post move. This is clearly an offensive foul, but many times a player gets away with it and gets an unfair advantage.

5. 3 seconds- This one has never been called too often, and it still isn't. I'm very sure that you could catch a ton of players for camping in the lane for quite some time if you really wanted to, but in large part this rule is ignored.

These five violations are gotten away with quite often. Can you think of other things that are commonly missed by basketball referees?

There has never ever been a call of over the back in the 23 yrs I have been officiating. People think there is such a call but there is not and never has been.
