1. Picking On Someone Else's Losses: You know the drill - you or one of your friends just never can seem to beat up that last guy in the fight sequence, no matter how many brutal combo tactics are tried. If you're an expert at it yourself, you might be quick to criticize their failures. Then when it comes to your turn, you don't want them picking on you. It's this double standard that really rubs the wrong way when gaming. And I'm guilty of it, too - don't get me wrong. But you should put a kibosh to it because you might frustrate your friend and impair their ability to get the sequence right.
2. Punching Random Buttons in an Action Sequence: If you're losing a fight, it's only natural to start furiously punching random button combinations in an attempt to create your own new, all-miraculous combat combo. It probably won't work. Plus, you'll just confuse the game character and probably end up losing. Take your time and execute each sequence with purpose, even if you are getting attacked by ten goons at once.
3. Blaming the Character for Your Mistakes: I'm probably the worst offender on this one. Every time Nate Drake falls off a cliff or doesn't get into cover in Uncharted, the first thing out of my mouth is, "Oh come on, Nate, don't do that!" or "What'd you do that for?" Is it the video game character's fault? I'd like to think it is. But of course, it's not. In fact, if you blame them out loud in the presence of others, they might think you're just making excuses for your poor gaming abilities.
4. Claiming the Best Action Sequences Every Time: It's easy to get bored with climbing and walking scenes in a video game, no doubt. But if you're playing with others, don't insist on being the one to play the best shooting scenes every time. That's the equivalent of hogging the game, and it's very immature. In fact, it's probably one of the most annoying video gaming habits period. So next time you snag the remote from your sister or a buddy, try to recall if you've been the one to complete this scene the past 10 times you played it.
5. Matching Your Voice to the TV Volume: One of the most annoying video gaming habits is raising your voice to match the already blaring level of the video game. And I'm of course guilty of this as well. Usually the vocals consist of "Don't you dare get out of cover," "Watch out for THAT guy," "Reload!" "Get in cover!" "No, no, no!" and "Is it my turn yet?" Now, multiply that times the 3-5 people who might be playing or observing all at once at my house, and you have a very noisy game room. Does a loud voice do any more good than a medium one? Not usually, it just makes you go hoarse. So try to tone down the volume or you'll sound like a drill sergeant.
