Top Five Reality Dancing Shows

Jody Harkavy
I love to watch dance competitions. It is so incredible watching people learn different techniques and adapt and grow each week. However, I am very picky about those I watch. Here is my top five dancing reality shows

5. Dance your Ass off - Okay, this may be cheating a little bit. The contestants on this show are not great dancers and the routines are not very exciting. However, it gives me, a regular, slightly out of shape person, hope that even I could perform a dance routine with a little bit of work.

I like seeing people reach for goals they never thought possible. And, I like watching people better themselves. Some of these people feel very bad about themselves and getting exercise can only help.

So, I get to watch people learning they can actually do a little dancing as they start to move and take better care of themselves. This show does more than just entertain, it gives all of us a little bit more hope. And, that is why it made onto my list.

4. Dancing with the Stars - I have to admit that I really like watching this show. I have always had a fondness for competitions and this one can be a lot of fun. The contestants are not always that talented, more personality than dancer. But you can't help but watch them.

Sometimes it's the train wreck we can't help wanting to see, but sometimes it's about watching a beautiful journey as the contestants make their way through the season. Tom Bergeron is charming and lends a bit of credence to the show. They dancing may not be the best out there, but it is definitely entertaining. So many people tune in to watch these celebrities battle it out with Paso dobles or even a slow waltz. They are doing something right.

3. Randy Jackson Presents Americas Best Dance Crew - I never used to like hip hop dancing. I didn't see much "musicality" in it. But this show has definitely changed my mind. And, that is a very important matter.

This show has shown dance for what it could offer kids, both in terms of the art of dancing itself and the teamwork it can foster. It is a positive message, one that kids need to hear.

As a parent, I am very happy to see what this show has to say. Hopefully the message is received.

2. Americas Ballroom Challenge - This PBS show is the most serious of the competition shows. And unlike most of the others, which seems to need to have the snide nasty judging, this competition is a celebration of the artistry and talent showcased.

It is a pleasure to watch the different ballroom styles and I learn more about them as I continue to watch. I think this show helps make dancing more accessible in a different way than the other shows on my list. It deserves its place on my list.

1. So You Think You can Dance - I have not missed a season since this show began. Each and every season I find one or two dancers to root for and watch mesmerized as these amazing dancers learn and grow with each performance.

Cat Deeley as host shows her genuine care for the contestants and we are drawn in, forced to care when two more people are sent home each week. The show has been described as a dancing version of American Idol. But, I think it far outshines American Idol in both quality and execution.

Every season I find myself yelling at the screen, strongly disagreeing when the judges give my favorites a not so great review and cheering when they "get it right." Isn't that what a competition show is supposed to do? This one achieves it, and more! It is not only my favorite dancing reality show it is my favorite reality show of all time.
