Top Five Reasns Amerians Are so Fat

What Are We Doing that is Killing Us?

Gino Sabato
The term physically fit in America today has changed to mean that as long as you can walk up a flight of stairs and not drop dead from a hear attack you are physically fit. America has gotten larger and larger and we are growing in all the wrong places. What could possibly cause such a gross enlargement of society in general? There are quite a few reasons but let's focus on the top five!

Reason Number One:

It doesn't matter if you've had your break today, got it your way, or made a run for the border most of us have eaten at one of the many fat factories that we call fast food restaurants at least once in the past month. Let's face it American's love convenience, the easier the better. Well not always. Fast food is probably the worst possible thing you can put in your body. Sure it's OK to have a greasy burger and deep fried french fries from time to time. Just like it's OK to have a glass of wine or a cold beer. The problems start when food like this becomes the norm rather than a treat. It seems over the years the burgers got bigger and so did the waist line of the average American. Coincidence, I think not!

Reason Number Two:

It has become acceptable to be a large person. When society as a whole starts to accept things like this it becomes OK in everyone's mind. Being overweight is not OK. Being overweight is more dangerous than just about anything, including smoking cigarettes and doing drugs. We need to stop making doors wider and offering electric scooters for the obese. Instead we need to send out a subliminal message that society is not going to cater to you being overweight so instead of driving that scooter to pick up your chips and soda at the local grocery store maybe it would be a better idea to walk at least some of the fat off on the way there.

Reason Number Three:

The produce department at the grocery store takes up far less space than the candy, chips, cakes, soda, butter, eggs and other unhealthy fattening items. It seems the entire store is dedicated to a growing midsection. We are drawn to the items that make us fat. They are packaged with bright colors and advertised with the use of fit models that could not possible eat the products that they help to hawk. We need truth in advertising. If you are going to make commercials for candy bars and potato chips at least be honest and use overweight actors.

Reason Number Four:

We don't get up of the couch, office chair, car seat etc... long enough to even work up a sweat. For some American's the most activity they get in a day is walking to and from their car on the way to another fattening meal. Exercise is probably the most prescribed medicine every doctor writes but we just don't do it anymore. Maybe we should consider tax breaks for those that join and actually use a gym.

Reason Number Five:

We are just too damn lazy. Society doesn't want to lift a finger to even push a button anymore. We don't care what we eat so long as it tastes good. We fail to do the proper research into the food that we put in our bodies. If we actually understood the chemicals put in our food and what the effects of eating that twinkie will have on our health overall most people would opt for a different snack. Maybe something that doesn't clog arteries and cause strokes and heart attacks.

Well there is no doubt that we are a growing society and that we have to change our bad habits. The real question is how do we do it? I'm fairly certain that nobody wants to be overweight but has accepted their girth as a fact of life. The best way to fix the problem is with education. Just like a pack of cigarettes has a warning on the package so should junk food. Warning this product will make you fat, unattractive and more than likely ruin your sex life. Put that on the side of a bag of chips and see if potato chip sales don't drop drastically.
