Top Five Tearjerkers: Movies that Make You Cry

Crissy Gottberg
In each of these movies it is the ending that truly makes you want to cry. Each movie has its own reason, its own poignant moment in which we realize that that person truly does not deserve what is happening, and yet it is.

We cry, we feel and we know that it is the only ending that makes any sense, and we will love these movies even while they bring tears to our eyes.

Seven Pounds

The story, featuring Will Smith, is a beautiful love story.

Ben Thomas is an unusual man, filled with a dark despair. Working for the IRS, he tries to help seven people. As we watch we see there is a hidden agenda, complicated by Emily Posa (Rosario Dawson).

The story is all the more dramatic because you do not know, until the end, exactly what he is trying to accomplish. Once you realize what he is doing, and the choice he has to make, you can't help but cry.

Marley and Me

Though this film begins with the meeting, and marriage of John (Owen Wilson) and Jennifer Grogan (Jennifer Aniston), the really story doesn't start until John brings home Marley, the worst dog ever.

Marley does everything wrong, but manages to worm his way into their hearts and lives. The true story is about how he makes this couple into a real family, following his life, and theirs with it.

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas

During WWII Bruno (Asa Butterfield) and his family move to a big house in the country where his father (David Thewlis), as a Commandant in the German military, must perform an important service for their country.

Told almost entirely through the boy's perspective, it shows the confusions facing one, young, German boy faced with the prejudices of a country, and his friend, a Jew, who is locked behind an electric fence.

The Passion of Christ

Whether you are Christian or not, the very real brutality of a man being tortured and crucified on screen, in detail, can not help but affect you.

Directed by Mel Gibson, this title met with much controversy, from being called over dramatized to many worrying about inciting prejudice and even violence. The very controversy surrounding this film speaks to its power of visual story telling.

The Green Mile

When John Coffey (Michael Clarke Duncan), a black man accused of killing children and rape, is put on death row under the watchful eyes of Paul Edgecomb (Tom Hanks) miraculous things begin to happen.

Set in the 30's, this movie touches on the prejudices of that time. However, it isn't long before Edgecomb realizes there is more to this large man accused of such brutal acts, a man who must sleep with the light on.

Honorable mentions:

Schindler's List.
Titanic
Saving Private Ryan
E.T.
Dying Young
The Fountain
Finding Neverland
