Top Five Warming Chick Flicks for a Cold Winter Night

Debbie Henthorn
Cold winter nights are perfect for snuggling up with a bowl of popcorn and watching a movie that reminds you of summertime. The following films are the best chick flicks to remind you of a warm summer night.

"Mamma Mia"
Starring Meryl Streep and Amanda Seyfried, the Greek island setting of "Mamma Mia" will take you to crystal blue Mediterranean waters.

Seyfried's Sophie wants her father to walk her down the aisle at her wedding. The problem is, her mother Donna (Streep) isn't exactly sure which of three men actually fathered her child. Sophie invites all three men hoping to determine which man will escort her to her husband-to-be.

The soundtrack is filled with ABBA's greatest hits sung by the cast and Meryl Streep won a People's Choice award for her rendition of "Mamma Mia".

"Bull Durham"
No, this isn't just a baseball movie! Susan Sarandon's Annie romances two of the boys of summer to help the Durham Bulls through the baseball season.

Every year, baseball fan Annie selects one member of the Bulls to take under her wing and is trying to choose between Kevin Costner's Crash and Tim Robbins' Nuke LaLoosh. A rivalry develops between the players as Costner tries to ignore his feelings for Annie.

This film also gave birth to one of the most romantic movie lines ever spoken as Crash explains what he believes in to Annie: "and I believe in long, slow, deep, soft, wet kisses that last for three days."

If that line doesn't warm you up, nothing will.

"South Pacific"
This classic never gets old. Starring Mitzi Gaynor as Nurse Nellie Forbush, this World War II musical is set at a military base in the Solomon Islands providing tropical scenery to warm you in the winter.

The troops are growing restless for an opportunity to join the war while Nellie falls in love with a French planter on the island. Lots of fun musical numbers are mixed with the romance of "Some Enchanted Evening".

"Under the Tuscan Sun"
Diane Lane's Francis takes a vacation in Tuscany following her divorce and buys a run-down villa on the spur of the moment. She begins her new life while renovating the home and eventually learns that her heart can mend.

The rich Mediterranean landscapes are blended into the movie to give you an escape from sub-zero wind chills.

"Dirty Dancing"
The most fun summer-setting movie ever! Great music, romance, drama - everything you need to get through a cold winter night.

It's the summer of 1963 and Baby (Jennifer Gray) and her family is on vacation at a summer resort. There she meets dance instructor Johnny (Patrick Swayze) and learns more than how to dance the mambo.

Pick any one of these warm-setting movies to take you away from a cold winter night.

Good grief! Don't let my wife see this or i'll have to watch these movies again! Just kidding, although I'd rather watch hockey.

I would add, "Beaches", any Nora Ephron flix, and Julie and Julia, which is funny cause I have an article pending on this topic!

I've only seen one of the films you mentioned in your article. I love to curl up and watch a good historical film about the Tudors or a classic Jane Austen film adaptation.

Awwwww MAN!!! Now you've spoiled things for me. You've put a couple of my favorite movies into the "Chick Flick" category and now I'll get a complex everytime I watch them. Then on the bright side, I've got something new to talk to my shrink about. Real nice 'to the point' reviews and very smooth reading. Good job.
