Trying to make ends meet when you are living through a recession can be very difficult. One of the things that many families do is take hand me downs from other families. Doing this can be a great way to save money but can actually be very difficult to keep everything neat, and organized. Below you will find several tips on how you can organize your hand me downs.
Separate by season
Start by separating the clothes per season, using bins to do this. For example sweaters, jeans, and sweatpants, can be placed in the same bin. Summer clothing can be placed in a separate bin. Be sure that you take the time to label each of the bins. The size of the bins should vary based on the amount of clothing that you have to pack away.
Separate by size
There are some families who find it easier to separate the clothes by size. This way you will not have to dig through a pile of clothes to find the size that your child is currently wearing. Instead all you have to do is open up the bin that has the right size clothing for them. Whatever method you are using to store items be sure that you label it properly.
Clean and iron before storing
You should never just assume that the person who gave you the clothing cleaned the clothes before they gave it to you. In some cases they may have, but it will ensure that the clothing last a lot longer if you store them away washed, pressed, and cleaned. Ironing them will help to ensure that they stay neater when folded.
Give them their own space
If your closet space is big enough you can have a section just for the hand me downs. This will help to keep everything as neat, and organized as possible. You can keep them to the back of the closet until they are big enough to wear them.
Out with the old
In order to make room for the new clothes you have to take the time to get rid of the old clothes. This means that you have to have your child try on their clothing, and see what fits, and what does not. Also check to see what items have holes in them, and are completely worn out. Whatever is worn you can throw out, and then what does fit you can pass on to someone else.
