Top Five Ways to Prevent Identity Theft

Although most people are completely unaware, they very easily could become the victim of some type of identity fraud. It is done so smoothly by experienced criminals that it can take a year or more for someone to realize that they have even been victimized. It is this reason that people must become more proactive when it comes to their personal information. The following are the top five ways to prevent identity theft:

1. The main way to prevent identity theft is to be thorough in checking any paperwork that is thrown away. Never toss anything away that has your personal information listed on it. This includes bank statements, credit card information, and anything containing your birthday or Social Security number. All of these items must be shredded before they are trashed.

2. Be suspicious of anyone who calls to question your account status. It is very easy for someone to lie to you about who they are. Make it a rule to never give any information over the telephone until you have verified their identity. You can do this by insisting you call them back and confirm the telephone number as being legitimate.

3. Be diligent in checking your mail when it is delivered to your home. If you are unable to get your mail within moments of its delivery, you should considering a post office box rental for your mail delivery. The only individuals that would have access to the mail are the postal carriers.

4. Never discuss your personal financial matters over a cell phone in a public place. Should you verify your identity by giving out the last four digits of your Social Security number or your birth date, anyone within hearing distance could now have enough of your personal information to do some damage to you.

5. Another important way to prevent identity theft is to keep personal information locked up safely at home. Should you carry all of your information with you, if someone stole your purse or your wallet was stolen, a criminal could easily have access to all of the credit cards on your person and your Social Security number, if you have that with you, as well.

These are just a few of the strategies you must use to prevent identity theft and fraud. Do your research and evaluate how you are handling your incoming mail, as well as your outgoing mail. The only way to prevent it from happening to you is to be diligent in watching where your information goes.
