If you are a mom who has chosen to stay at home and raise kids for a few years, you may be finding it difficult to suddenly get back. The way the economy is right now it really does not matter if you have a degree, or not. Companies are just not hiring like they used to, and this may leave you searching for a position that may no longer exist. There are several things that you can do which may help to make reentering the workforce a bit easier.
Switch fields
Even though you may have a degree in one area, there is nothing wrong with considering a career change. Let's face it there are some fields that are hiring, and others that are not. You may even end up enjoying your alternate career choice better than you would have thought. Take some time to do your research and fully explore all of your options.
Part time working mom
There are plenty of moms who keep their skills sharp while raising a family, by working part time. You can even still work part time in your preferred field. Or perhaps you can find a part time job that you can do from the comfort of your home. Some moms work just two hours a day, while there kids are napping, or during the evening hours. This way when you are ready to re-enter the work force you will be able to show that your skills are still just as sharp as they ever were.
Start your own business
Starting your own business is one of the best ways to re-enter the work force. It will obviously take time to get your business up and running, but it would be worth it in the long run. You may be able to put all of your skills to good use during this time.
Don't Wait
If you wait until the last minute to try and find work you will find it even more difficult. If you have a particular start time that you would need to be back at work, start looking for work at least six months in advance. It will probably take you this long to find the type of job that you would prefer, or one that fits into your field.
Reacquaint yourself
Since you have been out of the work force for some time, it is important that you get caught up on your field. Remember that things change quickly, and within a year's time, your field of choice may be different. Your skills that once put you on top may no longer be wanted. So you may need to focus on taking some refresher courses as well.
