Top Five Worst MTV VMA Nominations

Kathleen Dougherty
There are always a few in the bunch. Every awards show that ever was and ever will be has that one nomination that leaves people scratching their heads wondering why it deserved recognition. This year's MTV Video Music Awards is no exception. There are some nominees I look at and wonder how they were ever nominated in the first place. For this year's MTV VMA'a the Best New Artist category was especially dismal. It seems there were not a lot of new artists this year so the bottom of the barrel was scraped. Tune in Sunday, September 12, 2010 to watch Chelsea Handler emcee the MTV VMA's live from Los Angeles starting at 9/8 central. Is the public in agreement that these people do not deserve recognition or will I be eternally disappointed in the musical taste of the MTV viewing public? Here are my top five picks for worst MTV VMA nominations.

#5 MTV VMA Nominee who does not deserve an award: MGMT

MGMT is up for Best Rock Video and also for Best Hip Hop. Do they deserve an MTV VMA? I don't think so. Is Flash Delirium really what is passing for rock these days? The best descriptor for this song is simply, "boring". Poor singing, poor musicianship and some of the most blah drumming I've heard. If this song is your thing then have at it but don't try to pass it off as rock.

#4 MTV VMA Nominee who does not deserve an award: Nicki Minaj

Best New Artist nominee Nicki Minaj is neither anything to look at nor listen to. The video is like a bad parody of the "look how rich I am" rap videos of the late 1990's that have now become cliché. The music is tedious. The hook is grating. Nicki is the first of the bottom four who are nominated for an MTV VMA in the New Artist category. I will be so pleased when a new artist comes along with talent and originality. But it did not happen this year.

#3 MTV VMA Nominee who does not deserve an award: Broken Bells

Broken Bells is another nominated for an MTV VMA in the Best New Artist category. Admittedly, the video for The Ghost Inside was a lot better than the song itself. Given how terrible the song is, though, that's not saying much. The music was repetitive. The vocals were painful and somewhat reminiscent of 80's pop group Missing Persons with none of the originality. A glimmer of hope for this group, though, if they can turn out something more unique in the future.

#2 MTV VMA Nominee who does not deserve an award: Ke$ha

Ke$ha is nominated in the Best New Artist, Best Collaboration, Best Female and Best Pop categories. Because of so many MTV VMA nominations, somebody must like her so I may get some flack for her #2 spot on the list. Her tunes are catchy - somewhat. But, they are monotonous, her singing is truly bad and her dancing is worse. In five years, nobody will know or care who this person ever was. Similar to Justin Bieber, I just don't understand why she's so hot right now. But she does have one thing going for her: She's not Justin Bieber.

#1 MTV VMA Nominee who does not deserve an award: Justin Bieber

Speaking of Bieber, can someone explain this to me? Justin Bieber is nominated for an MTV VMA in the Best New Artist category. Try as a might, I cannot understand why anyone likes Bieber. Thankfully, it is the only category he is nominated in, though I was searching the Best Female Video category for signs of him. This kid has no discernable talent and I really hope the tweens get over him quickly because I keep running into him try as I might to avoid him. He does not deserve a nomination and I certainly hope he does not get an MTV VMA.
