5. Zombi 2: This is probably Lucio Fulci's most well-known film, and a great one at that. This is probably the least-known film on this list, but it's really a gem in the zombie genre. It's not quite as cohesive as the other movies, but it makes up for it with a creepy track and some great scenes. The best scene, in my opinion, is the zombie vs. shark scene, where a zombie battles a shark underwater. There is another scene with a close-up of a woman's eye as it is impaled on a splinter - one of the most disturbing scenes in movie history. While it's a good film, Zombi 2 wasn't exactly revolutionary and is therefore at the bottom of the list.
4. Shaun of the Dead: Many people think Shaun of the Dead is just a comedy, but it's also a really well-crafted zombie flick with some great horror aspects. This movie, combined with the Dawn of the Dead remake, introduced me to the zombie genre at the age of 15. As such, it holds a special place in my heart. Shaun of the Dead helped repopularize the horror-comedy and zombie-comedy genre, which was a bit stagnant at the time. Films like Zombieland, Flight of the Dead, and Zombie Strippers owe their (relative) success to this movie.
3. Night of the Living Dead: As the quintessential zombie film and the forerunner of many great titles, Night of the Living dead has really earned its spot on this list. It doesn't rank higher because, while it was definitely ground-breaking, some of the films that followed just did it better than Night. That said, no zombie films would exist without this one, and most pay homage to it in some way. As a truly revolutionary movie, Night of the Living Dead ranks in at number 3 on this list.
2. 28 Days Later: I know this isn't really a zombie film, but it has enough of the same elements to be featured on his list. One of the things that makes 28 Days so memorable is its wonderful and creepy score, combined with the breath-taking shots of an abandoned London. The infected are always a menace and as creepy and scary as any zombie. While not the first film to feature fast zombies, 28 Days Later (combined with Resident Evil,) was one of the first to really bring it into the mainstream. After 2002, most zombie films began using fast zombies.
1. Dawn of the Dead (1978): I feel that the original Dawn of the Dead is by far the best zombie film ever made. It is incredibly well-done and really conveys the sense of helplessness. Its overall theme is very similar to Night, but the film is just much more polished and far-reaching. It is also one of the most critically successful zombie movies ever created. It's more slow-paced than new zombie flicks, but any fan of the genre should really enjoy it.
