Top Four Celebrity Second Jobs

When Being a Singer or Actor Isn't Enough, These Second Jobs Pay the Bills

A. Gordon
Sometimes we overspend, and find ourselves short on cash at the end of the month. When that happens, many of us seek relief by taking on freelance work or finding a second job.

Celebrities are no different. No star shines bright forever, and the smart ones often shore up their income by earning revenue in other areas. In other words, they take on a second job.

Sometimes these second jobs are a huge success. Diddy laughed all the way to the bank when he branched out and launched his Sean John clothing label a few years ago. Sometimes these efforts flop. Rapper and actress Queen Latifah diversified her portfolio by launching her own talk show in the late '90s, but the show was a bust, and was cancelled after two seasons.

Here are four second jobs that have served celebrities well over the years:

Celebrity Second Job: Clothing Designer

Why It Works: The profit margin on clothes is huge. Stars can throw a few garments together using underpaid sweatshop labor and cash in on their name recognition to sell the clothes at an outrageous mark-up. For celebrities looking to add cash to the till, this second job is a true winner.

Who's Done It: Diddy with his Sean John line, Gwen Stefani with her L.A.M.B. line, Beyonce with her House of Dereon line, Jay Z with his Rocawear line.

Celebrity Second Job: Talk Show Host

Why It Works: For a celebrity whose star is fading, a talk show represents a great opportunity to worm his way back into the public eye. Americans love their talk shows, and a hit show could potentially win a star millions of new fans.

Who's Done It: Tyra Banks, Rosie O'Donnell, Ellen DeGeneres, Queen Latifah, Ricki Lake.

Celebrity Second Job: Restaurant Owner

Why It Works: Being a restaurant owner likely won't net a celebrity the gazillions that can come with owning their own clothing line. Still, it's a nice way to hustle some extra change to buy those Prada shoes and prescription drugs at the end of the month.

Who's Done It: Jennifer Lopez with Madre's, Justin Timberlake with Chi, Ashton Kutcher and Wilmer Valderrama with Geisha House, Denzel Washington and Norm Nixon with Georgia, Robert DeNiro with Ago, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck with The Continental,. Jamie Kennedy with Dolce, Cathy Moriarty with Mulberry Street Pizzeria.

Celebrity Second Job: Porn Star

Why It Works: Desperate times call for desperate measures. If you're a star with an urgent need for a cash, a "leaked" porn tape, sold over the Internet and in video stores, will usually do the trick.

Who's Done It: Paris Hilton, Dustin Diamond (Screech from Saved By The Bell) , Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee, Tonya Harding, Colin Farrell, Gena Lee Nolin of Baywatch, Jenna Lewis of Survivor, wrestling star Chyna, actor Tom Sizemore, Poison bandmember Brett Michaels.
