Top Four Reasons Why the Twilight Series is Such a Success

Note of caution: Some parts of this article may not be understood by someone who has not read or seen Twilight.

Twilight by Stephenie Meyer has gained quite a following not only from avid book-readers but from the general female population of the world. I am quite sure it is the book that made the movie famous, along with it - Robert Pattinson and Kristin Stewart.

Why is the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer such a hit? Here are my top four reasons:

The Story is "relatable"

I have not watched the movie, but I have read the books. They are written so well that a girl can actually look up and say, "Wow I know exactly how that feels!" Imagine your feelings put into words like that.

This is for me one of the primary reasons Twilight has become so well-loved by a lot of girls - young and young at heart. The fact that the book is written from the perspective of a woman doesn't do much damage either.

A few chapters of Midnight Sun, the Twilight story from the perspective of Edward Cullen was leaked out just this year and everybody wanted to read it too. But honestly it isn't exactly as good as the way it was presented in the female protagonist's perspective.

The Romance is classic

We've seen it over and over again. Boy meets girl, boy falls in love with girl, they get into trouble... they work it out, they live happily ever after.

Most stories are like that. But the formula works. It just varies from one to the other, either the boy is prince charming and the girl is plain or the girl is a movie star and the boy is a philanderer. But the feeling it invokes in people just makes the story appealing. Everybody loves a happy ending.

The love triangle has also added just the right amount of spice. I've seen small shops mushroom on the internet as well as in brick and mortar stores selling Twilight paraphernalia. A lot of people buy them too. I'm especially amused by the "Team Jacob" and "Team Edward" shirts that women sport around.

The Seductively Charming Vampire

Twilight has inspired a whole new generation of girls who would rather have the thin pale handsome guy rather than the dark and buff kind. Twilight has inspired romance in so many young girls (myself included).

I've seen it before, from Gary Oldman who played Bram Stoker's Dracula a couple of decades back to "Interview with the Vampire" shortly after with Lestat de Lioncourt played by Tom Cruise and Louis de Pointe du Lac brought to life by Brad Pitt. There is also the more recent but less famous Moonlight television series where Alex O'Loughlin portrays vampire private investigator Mick St. John and HBO's Stephen Moyer who's the vampire on the series, True Blood. Robert Pattinson is very fortunate to have joined their ranks.

All these beautiful men have played the seemingly charming and seductive vampires that have captured the hearts of many young ladies in the movies and books and of course the vicarious living, lots of girls around the world as well.

The Fantasy Entwined In the Love Story

The what-if concept found in most books make it very interesting.

-- "What if" the couple fell in love during the war

-- "What if" the girl was an alcoholic

-- "What if" the boy went into a coma

-- "What if" the girl was queen and was betrothed to another

-- "What if" the boy... was a vampire

The fantastic way the story integrated the existence of vampires and werewolves made the simple love story come alive with creatures and special effects and another world that I for one, would want to escape to.

In this mundane life where stock prices are crashing and the economies are plummetting, in the midst of all this doom and gloom being able to get away into this world of make-believe just encompasses a short recluse, where there is such a being and there is such a love. These are but four elements that make Twilight such a success, I'm sure there are more reasons out there - each girl may have her own reason but nevertheless the Twilight saga will continue to be remembered as one of the most charming novels of all time.

Oh, Oh, Oh! Over hear, waving my hand over here! I am very proud to say that this is one American female who has not only NOT read the Twilight Series, but will NEVER read the Twilight Series. I work in a book store and because I have neither have, nor know any teenagers, I was unaware of the insanity sweeping the nation (and no, I don't quite live under a rock) when I started. One day into the job, I could sense something was deeply wrong. We ran out of the books faster than the Government runs out of cheese. And this was right before Christmas. It got seriously ugly when our store was mistakenly sited as a post Halloween "Twilight" party and gaggles upon gaggles of teenagers (of all sexes) dressed worse than any Lord of the Rings geeks left the store devastated that we had no festivities planned. Of course, it was VERY festive of me to tell "Nope, no secret blood-letting here tonight!" Any book or series or any form of entertainment that would incite a near-riot where the te
