Holiday Gift Guide

Pam Gaulin
There are times when you need to buy a non-gender specific gift for children of a certain age, in this case one-year-olds. Perhaps there's you're attending a neighborhood, church or community gift swap. Or your daycare provider or play group is exchanging holiday gifts. There are many toys which are appropriate for either a one-year-old boy or a one-year old girl.

Anyone who has been around one-year-olds know that they are quite content with and empty tissue box or a big wooden spoon and some pots and pans. Because they are easily entertained it is not necessary to spend a ton of money on a gift for a one-year-old. In fact, it's possible to spend very little. Here is aholiday gift guide for buying gifts for $10 and under for one-year-old boys or one-year-old girls.

This set of 12 large plastic blocks come in different geometric and organic shapes and four different fun colors. As a bonus, the cover of the block box is a shape sorter, encouraging children to learn the difference between the four differently shaped blocks. This is one of the most basic, battery-free and fun toys you can buy for a one-year-old boy or girl. It does not have a lot of pieces, just acolorful phone on wheels that a one-year-old can pull along by its string. Retail price: $5.

The one that makes the pleasant "pop pop pop" sounds when the colorful balls bounce up and down? It's been around since 1957. Any toy that has stood the test of time is worth giving a spin. Fortunately, classic toys like this are still being made and are available at a reasonable price. Retail price: $10.

Linking Letters by Sassy, Inc. One-year-old babies love to chew everything, including plastic links. This set of 26 colorful links has a link for each letter of the alphabet. If you connect two or three links together a typical one-year-old boy or girl will have fun waving it around in the ear and making noise with the letter links. The links are also useful because they can be used to attach toys to strollers, high chairs, or baby chairs. This gift for one-year old boys and one-year-old girls retails for under $10.

If you do buy the Lil Snoopy, you may want to cut the "leash" down to a safer 12 inches or less. Also, as common sense would dictate, because the Lil Snoopy does have a leash, it should not be left with a baby in a crib or a playpen. The list was put on a danger list by the www.toysafety.org
