Top Gifts for Aspiring Freelance Writers

The book "Make a Real Living as a Freelance Writer" by Jenna Glatzer is an excellent resource for aspiring writers. The book covers everything you need to know to be an excellent freelance writer from writing a great cover letter to dealing with agents. There are tips on doing great interviews and tons of insider facts from a real life freelance writer. This is an excellent book to purchase not only for aspiring freelance writers but also for those who may have already been in the freelance market for a while. The book offers tons of practical writing advice in an easy to read straightforward way.

Writers Market

One of the biggest struggles in freelance writing is finding somewhere to sell your work once you write it. The Writer's Market series of books are put out yearly and contain the submission requirements, contact information, and pay scale or thousands of different publishers. There are several different Writers' markets on the market so it's good to know what type of writing your writer is interested in before you go buy. If you don't know then the standard "Writer's Market" is usually a safe bet. Other options include "The Novel and Short Stories Writers Market", "Childrens Writers and Illustrators Writer Market", "the Songwriters Market" and "The Poets Market".

Moleskine Notebook

When I first started writing I became obsessed with these notebooks, and think they are a great idea for anyone who is interested in writing for a living. The small leather bound notebooks are perfect for keeping with you all the time and jotting down ideas as they come to you for articles or stories. Some of the best ideas happen when you least expect them, so it can be a great idea to have a small notebook on hand to jot them down and save them until you are near your computer again.

Writing Magazine Subscription

Nothing makes you feel like a writer more than getting a big paycheck in the mail. If you can't get a huge paycheck in your mailbox everyday then a good writing magazine can be a great mailbox treat as well. My personal suggestion for a good writing magazine is "Poets & Writers", the magazine has frequent interviews with writers, and has news on the publishing market in general. Think of it as the Entertainment Weekly for people who get excited about writing instead of movie stars. "Writer's Digest" is also a great magazine resource for writers offering a lot of practical advice on how to break into particular markets, as well as interviews with great writers.

:-) This isn't just a list for aspiring writers... but for those who've written for a long time (like myself!) too. Super ideas here and I enjoyed reading this.
