A Medical Coder is responsible for assigning "codes," for billing of a patient's chart. Abstract thinking is a must i this position. A medical coder is responsible for going though each medical chart thoroughly to make sure that everything is properly documented and assigned all the appropriate codes for diagnoses, procedures performed, prescriptions given, equipment utilized, etc.

Medical Legal Secretary: A legal secretary in the medical field will often work in the Medical Records Department of a hospital, nursing home or other medical facility. The person in this job is responsible to see that all requests for medical records are handled per the law. This including obtaining proper signed releases for information requests, as well as ensuring the safety and privacy of the medical records and patient's legal rights are protected.

Health Information Technician (HIT): Formerly referred to as a file clerk, this person is responsible for handlng phone calls hospital floors, doctors and outside facilities requesting old records on patients currently in the facilty. The HIT is responsible for a variety of duties, which may include updating files, faxing reports, processing and delivery of old records to the hospital floors, as well as current reports transcribed.
