When Staying Home is Fun

In order to help stimulate the economy and businesses at whole, I would think people would be encouraged to go out and have a good time. However, time after time I am experiencing and hearing stories on how others are using their power to profit off the average citizen. Recently, the Los Angeles Police Department had a raid on people crossing the street. The people were not jay-walking, or crossing on a red light, they were simply crossing because the numbers on the light said they had 15 (or more) seconds. However, the numbers on the light are not there to inform pedestrians on how much time they have to get across, and according to the police it's illegal to cross when the numbers are showing. I watched the officers give citation after citation; because very few people knew what they were doing was wrong. The officers were obviously on a mission to generate revenue, because if it was just about public safety, the officers could have given everyone a warning. However, after the officer gets paid his time and an half for appearing in court, the city will have not made that much money after all.

Now earlier this year, Senator Allen Lowenthal, from Long Beach, also made headlines as he worked on legislation that reduces free parking. "Free parking has significant social, economic and environmental costs," Lowenthal said. Coming from a small town, I never really understood how a business charged customers for the common decency of letting them park their cars so they can spend money in their stores or restaurant. Although driving can cause traffic congestion, many times it is also a necesscity that benefits businesses more than it hurts. In addition, when commuting for work, public transportation is not always ideal. As someone who (for now anyway) takes Metro, there were plenty of times I felt my safety was in danger. Citizens should not have to choose between safety and the enconomic hardship of paid parking everytime they need to commute for work or pleasure.
The MTA, is also making it difficult for people to try public transportation. Now, MTA requires you to buy a TAP card instead of providing paper monthly passes. Previously with a paper pass, the commuter is just responsble for one fee. Now, riders have to pay an additional $2.50 for a TAP card. Like all electronic devices they don't last forever, so once it loses it's coding, customers have to buy another card, plus the normal boarding fee. With all the aggervation from police, parking, and public transportation, it's as if people would be better off staying at home and entertaining.

Entertaining at home is not such a bad idea, as every month there is usually either a holiday or big event (such as an award show) that you can use as the theme for your entertainment gathering.
