Top Horror Movies to Scare You This Halloween

If You're Brave Enough..

It's that time of year again... Time for the ghosts and goblins to frighten the little heroes and princesses that wander the streets for goodies. Or, you could forgo the tricks and treats and decide to stay in for the full-moonlit-evening, and catch a scare on the big screen. Halloween is the perfect night for a gruesome horror flick. Not sure which to chose? Read on for the top 10 Halloween movies to watch this year (in no particular order).

Amityville Horror (1978) Based in Amityville, New York, a couple purchases a home that ends up being the epitome of evil. This film is ghostly, with haunted voices and bloodcurdling screams. This movie is known to be one of the best horror movies in decades.

Saw (2004) This movie has a mind-twisting, psychologically agonizing plot, in which a murderer entraps his victims and forces them to make a fatal, and often blood-spattered, choice. This film, as gruesome and bloody as it is, happens to be one of the better horror flicks in this age. It was followed by a sequel, Saw II, however I cannot say that I had enough nerve to watch it. I hear it was better than the original. Good luck.

War of the Worlds (1953) This one is a different kind of horror. The fear of the world's end takes over as the main characters run for their life from all sorts of drama, including an alien that threatens them in what they think is a safe abandoned farm house. If you're not one for older movies, check out the new War of the Worlds featuring Tom Cruise. Both movies are based on H.G. Wells' book of the same title.

Mothman Prophecies (2002) This is a movie everyone will like. The movie takes place in an insect-like setting in West Virginia. The men will relish the creepy phone calls, mysterious disappearances, and lurking of dark figures. The women will love the main character: Richard Gere!

Seven (1995) Again with the gorgeous actors: Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Kevin Spacey. Need another reason to watch this gory film? Each of the seven deadly sins are violated, and one man feels its his duty to punish each of the violators. Scenes are graphic and revolting, and there are too many twists to mention!

Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) When the teenagers on Elm Street drift off to sleep, it's not sweet dreams they see, it's Wes Craven's Freddy Krueger. Freddy enters through the dreams of the children on which he seeks revenge; the children of the mob that killed him many years before. With blades for fingers, these children are at the nightmarish hands of a frightfully evil murderer. Don't go to sleep...!

Ghost Ship (2002) The scene is set on a beautiful ship on a cruise across the ocean with only the richest and fanciest of people on board. During a picturesque, outdoor ballroom dance, a line snaps and...well, I don't want to spoil the fun. Salvagers explore the ship for any worth that might be aboard, only to find that they have ventured into the most deadly, haunted ship that may (or may not) exist. Now, their only goal is to make it to the surface alive. Filled with blood, gore, and the occasional psychological twist, this is a definite for Halloween night.

Hellraiser (1987) Okay, someone grab the pain killers, because the main character here definitely has a headache. A skinless, malicious murderer from Hell comes back to seek revenge. You'll see demons, bondage, clever visual effects, and some body parts here and there.

The Grudge (2004) A terrible curse, known as the Grudge, possesses its victims' bodies, causing them to suffer in a catatonic state, or even die. This one house in Tokyo that is the home to repeated unfortunate nurses, holds a horror that words cannot describe. This graphic film is full of surprises; you will scream at least once. For a second scream, try the sequel, The Grudge II. It's even better...or worse...depending on how you look at it.

And finally....no Halloween is complete without a viewing of...

The Exorcist (1973) This is a classic horror film, of which all subsequent horror films bow in the presence. There is blood. There is vomit. There are spinning heads and explicit theatrical scenes. I dare you to sit through the entire movie.

On Halloween night, sit back and relax with a big bowl of popcorn, a few good movies, and a blanket to cover your eyes during the horror-filled scenes.

I am not brave enough! Amityville always scared me to death, but that could be because we all thought out house was haunted growing up. I remember seeing flies after watching that movie and being scared! My parents loved horror flicks and thus have ruined me for life.
