The Texas-Oklahoma Rivalry Has Produced Some of the Greatest Individual Efforts in Football

The Red River Rivalry between the Oklahoma Sooners and the Texas Longhorns is one of the biggest stages in college football. The game has brought out some of the best individual performances among the games athletes. Great rivalries bring out the best and thrill us with meaningful and entertaining match ups. Running backs, receivers, quarterbacks and kickers have all had career games in series.

De'Mond Parker

On October 11, 1997 De'Mond Parker had an incredible game for the Oklahoma Sooners. Parker rushed for 291 yards on 31 attempts. De'Mond also scored three touchdowns. Unfortunately for Parker and the Sooners, Texas had an answer in Ricky Williams who rushed for 223 yards. Texas won the game 27-24 and ruining Parkers great rushing day.

Quentin Griffin

Griffin had a couple of great games in the Red River Rivalry. One could pick the 2002 game where he rushed for 248 yards on 32 attempts. Quentin also scored 6 touchdowns in the 2000 match up. In 2002 the Oklahoma Sooners beat Texas 35-24. Oklahoma also won in 2000. the score was Sooners 63 Longhorns 14.

Major Applewhite

In 1999 Major Applewhite of Texas out dueled Oklahoma's quarterback Josh Heupel. The two quarterbacks passed for over 600 yards with Major passing for a series record 328 yards at the time. Applewhite's big day helped Texas overcome a 17-0 deficit and win the game 38-28.

Sam Bradford

Sam Bradford of Oklahoma broke Major Applewhite's record for passing yards. Sam smashed it as he passed for 387 yards. He also broke Jason Wite's record of four touchdown passes by throwing five. Unfortunatly for Bradford, he also threw two interceptions. The Sooners lost to Texas 45-35.

Mark Clayton

Oklahoma Sooner Mark Clayton had the second highest number of receptions in a game in the 2003 Red River Rivalry. Clayton caught 8 passes one shy of the record. However, he did set the single game reception yards records in the series with a 190. Oklahoma routed Texas 65-13.

Russell Erxleben

Texas Longhorn kicker Russell Erkelben hit the longest two field goals in the Red River Rivalry in 1977. He hit a field goal of 58 yards and 64 yards. He also kicked an extra point as Texas won 13-6. Russell kicked for more points than Oklahoma scored in the game.
