Top Late Blooming Perennials

When the summer season is waning and most flowers begin to loose their vibrancy and bloom, what flowers can you turn to in a time in need of color? Here are some popular later bloomers perennials favorites that will guarantee to last you from the late summer through the fall season adding bright, beautiful hues to your garden.

Asters
These flowers are definite late bloomers as they thrive from late August until early October. They form bushy mounds of daisy-like blooms in various shades of blue, purple, pink, and white. These flowers prefer full sun contact and well-drained soil, and plenty of air. The plus about these flowers is that they can be pinched back during the summer season to encourage better fall blooms. Popular asters include: Frickhart's Aster, Heath Aster, False Aster (Boltonia), New England Aster, and Rhone Aster.

Chrysanthemums
These flowers are probably the most showiest of all late-blooming perennials, and are also the easiest to grow. Offering multiple colors and shapes, anyone is bound to find one that they want in their summer to fall garden. Like asters, these flowers can be pinched back during the summer season to encourage better fall blooms.

Dahlias
These flowers are tuberous and boast at least 36 different species. They bloom from summer to fall and are commonly used as garden plants. They are often highly prized in flower judging shows and come in several different hybrids with memorable names such as "Dinnerplate Dahlia", "Blackberry Ripple", "Tahiti Sunrise", and "Babylon's Garden".

Goldenrod
These flowers tend to bloom in August, and are easy to grow even in poor soil. These plants flourish as the same color as their preference- the sun. They tend to commonly grace gardens and meadows. Goldenrods have their pros and cons; they are often used in the garden as a pest and insect repellants, but their heavy pollen is known to cause allergens.

Russian Sage
These flowers bloom with lavender-blue spikes atop silver colored foliage and thrive best from midsummer through the autumn season. They tolerate poor soil, wide range of pH difference, and drought climates, and needless to say, are easy to grow. These flowers are also pleasantly fragrant.

All of these types of flowers can be purchased at your local home improvement stores such as Lowe's and Home Depot and also at mass merchandise stores that offer gardening centers such as Wal-Mart and Target.
