It is mid-December, and television programs as well as various publications are abuzz with lists of the top events, people, music, gaffes, movies, hotels, cities, toothpastes, inventions of 2006.
To save you some time, I've gathered a few of the most popular Top __ of 2006 lists and added brief commentary.

Top Hospitals 2006
The Leapfrog Group has named 50 hospitals following its quality and safety survey. Some of the winners:

The 10 Best Books of 2006
For those who hold the New York Times Book Review in high regard, this is the list that tops them all. Among the books listed, you'll find: Absurdistan, Falling through the earth and Mayflower.

Highest Paid Actresses:
Julia Roberts has long been famous as the highest paid actress in Hollywood, but the honor has now been passed on to Nicole Kidman, who in my opinion is a stick on legs that cannot act. Nicole is followed by Julia, Reese Witherspoon, Renee Zellwegger and Drew Barrymore. Read the list for more.

World's Most Beautiful People:
People Magazine's list of beautiful people came as no surprise to those familiar with its style. Among those listed: Angelina Jolie, Eva Longoria, James Blunt (say what?) and Brandon Routh.

Stephen King's Top 10 Music Picks of 2006: Entertainment Weekly managed to get Stephen to share his favorite music. You'll find tracks such as ''I'm a Rat,'' Towers of London and ''Chasing Cars,'' Snow Patrol.

Top Jobs 2006:Fast Company tells us which carrers to pursue. Topping the list: Lawyer, Personal financial advisor, Sales manager,Management analyst, Computer and information systems manager, Financial manager.
