Top Low Carb Products at Trader Joe's

For Spring 2007

Stephanie Dray
If you're watching your carbohydrates and sugar intake, Trader Joe's might be the answer to your prayers. This whole foods market chain has unusual high quality products at low prices, and some of them are low on the glycemic index. Here's a list of the top products this season at Trader Joe's.

Eggs
High in protein and good cholesterol, eggs will do a body good. And Trader Joe's has them for less than what you'd pay in a normal grocery store. So stock up!

Chicken Sausage
Trader Joe's has a line of pre-cooked, packaged, chicken sausage that is as tasty as it is nutritious. There are several varieties of this Trader Joe's sausage, and each is spiced to perfection. The sun-dried tomato variety is great in lasagna and the jalapeno blend has gotten rave reviews. Some of the Trader Joe's chicken sausages are as little as 90 calories and 1 carb per link. And the price can't be beat.

Flax Tortilla Chips
At 8-9 carbs a serving, Trader Joe's Flax Chips may be a little high for those on a very restricted diet. But because they contain corn, they easily pass for the real thing, and some say that the flax seeds only add to the texture. Served with some chipotle salsa and it's sure to be a hit at any party.

Garlic & Herb Cubes
When you're avoiding carbohydrates, sugar, and other processed foods, you have to do a lot more cooking. Trader Joe's helps take some of the hassle out of fixing ethnic dishes by freezing up little cubes of crushed garlic, basil, and cilantro. They're easy to cook with, and it's hard to go back to crushing your own once you've used them.

Greek Yogurt
If you're not a yogurt fan, it may be the whey that's keeping you from loving one of the world's oldest treats. Greek yogurt is drained, and more like sour cream or cream cheese than traditional American yogurt. Trader Joe's carries this thick, creamy, indulgent treat and even makes their own brand. However, the FAGE brand from Greece is considered the best, and comes in a fat free version, a two percent version, and a full fat version. (Also, remember when counting carbs, that there's a yogurt exception. The live cultures end up eating the sugars, so yogurt is actually about half the carbs listed on the nutrition panel or less.)

Trader Joe's Imitation Breakfast Patties
These breakfast patties are meatless, but some people prefer them to the real thing. They taste too good to be true, and their low-calorie, low-carb profile is exciting. They're 70 calories and 1 carb a piece. Put two of these in the microwave on a lazy Sunday afternoon, and serve it with your eggs for a complete and hearty breakfast.

Almond Flour
Sick of soy flour? Can't stand the taste? Almond flour may just be the solution for you. It lends a moist, buttery flavor to baked goods and it has a rustic texture that might be reminiscent of things your grandmother baked. Since people discovered how versatile almond flour is when baking low carb, the price of almonds just keeps going up. But Trader Joe's almond flour is an absolute steal. Low carb bakers may wish to stock up on it, and store it in their freezer to keep the almond flour fresh. But as long as Trader Joe's keeps offering it at stellar prices, there's no need to.

Picatta Sauce
Sure, you could make your own. But why bother, when Trader Joe's offers a perfect blend of lemon, capers and spices. This simmer sauce gives you a lot of flavor without adding a lot of sugar. Served over chicken and broccoli, it's a complete, authentic meal.

Edamame
Not sure what side dishes to serve with all that protein? Try something unusual. Trader Joe's Edamame is easy to prepare, and fun to eat. You steam and salt the pods, and munch on the seeds inside for a nutritious and health conscious snack.

There you have it. The top low carb products at Trader Joe's this season. Let's hope they continue to add to their excellent offerings.
