Top Miley Cyrus Songs from a Mom's Point of View

As a clueless mom, way too old to be in the know, I didn't expect much of a difference when Hannah Montana "switched places" with her alter ego, Miley Cyrus during her live performance on the "Best of Both Worlds" tour. I figured, okay, she'll take her wig off. I couldn't have been more wrong. When the wig came off, the edge came out. Give that girl some credit...little Miley's got spunk! Miley puts forth the attitude and sass of a genuine rock star, minus the Disney supervision. In no particular order, here's mom's opinion of the top five Miley Cyrus songs.

Butterfly Fly Away

A beautiful, coming of age song, Butterfly Fly Away appeared not only on the "Hannah Montana Movie Soundtrack", but also as an extended version on daddy Billy Ray Cyrus' "Back to Tennessee" album. A while back, Billy Ray did a somewhat similar tune, Ready, Set, Don't Go, which also refers to the formidable bond between parent and child. I like to think that this one comes as a sort of sequel to that one, in the form of a child's appreciation for their parent.

The Climb

Another fantastic song from the "Hannah Montana Movie Soundtrack", The Climb sends an inspirational message. Life's a journey, not a destination, and the journey is what truly matters. If we spend our whole life waiting for the end result (which always seems to simply morph into another goal to chase), can we ever find satisfaction? Learn what you can along the way, and relish the memories and experiences gained. This may easily be the most pertinent song released from the entire Miley/Hannah enterprise.

Fly On the Wall

Oh, the alluring world of teenage secrets. Sassy and catty, Miley shows some guts with Fly On the Wall. The music track backing the vocals is edgy and fun, a far cry from the pop diva Hannah. The official music video for the song is equally fast-paced and eye-catching. Even though the lyrics are simplistic, the chorus has a teasing, cute ring to it.

7 Things

Heartbreak almost always makes for a great song. Combine that with just a pinch of Alanis Morrisette-style angst, and you get 7 Things (I Hate About You). Rumor has it that the song reflects Miley's mindset after her much-publicized breakup with pop prince, Nick Jonas of the Jonas Brothers. Laced in biting criticisms, 7 Things also shows the vulnerability of someone who wants to hate so bad after heartbreak, but simply cannot turn off the emotion that was so recently welcome and accepted. When these emotions clash, you get fireworks!

See You Again

See You Again relates the nervous feelings of an instant crush and the behaviors that incorporate the discovery of new possibilities in love. Though the lyrics aren't as deep and meaningful as other Miley hits, it's the voice that got me on this one. Miley's hauntingly snide tone meets a simplistic groove riff that will keep this one dancing through the brain for days after you hear it.

Songs not included in Miley's top 5, but certainly deserving of an honorable mention, at least: Start All Over, Simple Song, Bottom of the Ocean and East Northumberland High...all worthy of a listen!
