At birth, Nicolas Cage's last name was Coppola. When he got into acting he wanted to change his last name from the legendary Coppola. His uncle is Francis Ford Coppola. Nicolas wanted to distinguish himself as his own individual and wanted no favors because of his family. So, he chose to change his last name to Cage.
When asked why choose the name Cage, he replied that the name came from the comic book character Luke Cage. Luke Cage was the first black superhero. Nicolas Cage's very first movie was 1982's Fast Times At Ridgemont High. He had a small role, but he has certainly made up for it since then. Nicolas Cage has been in several excellent films. Here is a look at some of the top films featuring Nicolas Cage.
Early in his acting career, Cage starred in several films that are still popular today. In 1986 he was in Peggy Sue Got Married, a film directed by his uncle, Francis Ford Coppola. In 1988 he played alongside Cher in Moonstruck, a film that earned several Oscars. In 1990 Cage put on an astounding performance in the dramatic film, Time to Kill.
After this, Cage went on to star in several comedies, one of which was 1994's It Could Happen To You. Cage played a character that everyone would love to be, someone who won the lottery. Also in 1994, Cage put on another comedic performance in Trapped In Paradise, in which he played a criminal with a bit of bad luck.
A third comedic performance in 1994 for Nicolas Cage was Guarding Tess. Tess is played brilliantly by Shirley MacLaine, and the on screen dynamics between the two are nothing short of humorous.
1997 was another good year for Cage, this time with dramatic roles. 1997 was the year for The Rock, Con Air, and Face Off. In 1998 Cage played an angel alongside Meg Ryan in the romantic film, City of Angels. Other notable roles for Cage came in 1999's 8mm and 2003's Matchstick Men.
More recently, Cage starred in the 2006 film World Trade Center. Cage played the true life role of Port Authority police officer John McLoughlin. The film followed McLoughlin on September 11th and shows his true story.
