Top Natural Remedies for Bites and Stings

Katherine Huether
I love the outdoors. That's why I keep my natural remedies for bites and stings close by because you just never know when you'll need them. I could get stung or bitten by something any time of the year where I live so it's important to always stay on my toes.

Being an herbalist, I prefer natural remedies over store-bought, synthetic ones. In this article, I'll share with you give of my favorites. These have all been time tested and have worked for me in the past.

Apple Cider Vinegar for Bites and Stings

This is the first natural remedy I've ever used for bites and stings. When I was small, my grandmother would put apple cider vinegar on my mosquito bites and bee stings. It relieved the itching and pain almost immediately. You can either apply it with a cotton ball right on the sting or bite or dilute it with water first.

Aloe Vera Gel to Soothe the Skin

Aloe vera gel is one of my favorite remedies for bites and stings because it helps soothe the skin. When I get bitten by certain bugs, I often have a bad reaction. The aloe vera gel calms down the itching and redness that occurs. It has an immediate cooling effect but it needs to be constantly reapplied. You can buy it in the store or squeeze it out of the fresh plant. Just snip some of the leaves off the plant and squeeze right onto the area.

Drink Green Tea

Most people don't think of this but green tea can be really helpful against bites and stings. When you get bitten or stung and it creates swelling, itching, and even pain, this could indicate that you have at least a mild allergy. Green tea is great for allergies, mainly because of the quercetins which help block the histamine response. You can also apply some of the tea on the irritated areas. It will help with any swelling and itching.

Take Vitamin C

Right when you get bitten or stung, take 500-1000 mg of Vitamin C. This is another way that you can block the histamine response. It will also help boost your immune system so your body will heal from the irritation faster. If you don't want to take the capsules you can eat foods that are rich in the vitamin or drink rosehips tea which is another great source.

When you get bitten or stung by an insect, it is possible to relieve the irritation using natural remedies. However, if you are severely allergic, don't rely on natural cures. You'll need to get professional help immediately and call 911.
