Top Organic Grocery Stores in Metro Detroit

Nick Meyer
Finding good organic produce has been difficult for a while but a new revolution has begun in the past few years as more and more places have begun to add strong organic food sections.

The top organic grocery stores in metro Detroit are ones that feature a wide array of produce from different regions of the country.

While it's smart as a socially conscious shopper to buy in-season fruits and vegetables (and local ones at that), it's not usually feasible to do so in a climate like the one metro Detroiters see each day.

With that in mind, here are good picks for top organic grocery stores in the area:

1. Zerbo's Health Foods, Livonia (http://www.zerbos.com/retailer/store_templates/shell_id_1.asp?storeID=5DDC50E796734E49AEDE162FFC8CABF9)-

Located at 34164 Plymouth Rd. in Livonia, Zerbo's has a massive selection of health foods along with a juice bar, book store section, upscale products like advanced water filters and more, a large natural cosmetic section, and many other unique items. The store is a virtual hub of health and information as natural health vendors leave fliers en masse in the lobby area to showcase their skills and products.

The staff is friendly and helpful and the organic produce section is constantly re-stocked with items from various countries.

2. Better Health, Plymouth (http://www.thebetterhealthstore.com/

Located at 44427 Ann Arbor Rd. at the corner of Sheldon, this is one of the best and most complete of a Michigan-based chain of health food stores.

The Plymouth location features a strong selection of health food items including an excellent, newly-added organic produce section that ranks among the best in the area. The supplement selection is also quite strong here as well.

3. Trader Joe's, Novi/Royal Oak (www.traderjoes.com).

The Royal Oak store is at 27880 Woodward while the Livonia store is at 20490 Haggerty Road, close to the Novi area and its many restaurants. This growing chain of grocery stores is always packed to the gills with tons of organic fruits and vegetables whether or fresh or frozen and lots of other unique items that use real food ingredients unlike traditional grocery stores.
It's like a Whole Foods store with more personality.
