Fantasy Baseball Draft Guide for the Houston Astros Season of 2009

Jason Sacks
Fantasy Baseball 2009

The Houston Astros did not have the season they wanted in 2008. They are looking to make improvements to the team, and very well should as there are many prospects in the minor leagues. These are the top 5 rookies for the 2009 season.

#1 Houston Astros Rookie - Jason Castro - Pitcher - Fantasy Baseball 2009

Jason Castro had a strong 2008 season. The Astros are somewhat shaky in the catcher department for the future so Castro is a strong fantasy league pick. Castro has shown that he is a strong defensive catcher and carries an above average throwing arm. Look for Castro to get some serious playing time down the road.

#2 Houston Astros Rookie - Brian Bogusevic - Outfielder - Fantasy Baseball 2009

Brian Bogusevic showed in the 2008 season that he is a strong hitter with few strikeouts. According to CBS Sports, Brian Bogusevic is one of the most disciplined players at the plate. Brian lacks homerun power, so he may be empty in that category of fantasy rankings. However, Brian did show rapid improvement in his 2008 season, so he is likely to continue to improve. Brian is a strong choice for fantasy leagues because he plays all of the outfield positions.

#3 Houston Astros Rookie - Bud Norris - Pitcher - Fantasy Baseball 2009

Bud Norris has strong throwing arm, posting stats as high as mid 90's according to CBS sports. Norris has shown a strong arm, yet lacks the ability to change speeds well. This leaves him more suited to relief and bullpen work rather than starting games. Norris is likely to get a decent amount of play time in the 2009 season and is a strong choice for your fantasy draft.

#4 Houston Astros Rookie - Phil Disher - First Base - Fantasy Baseball 2009

Disher is somewhat of a wild care. While posting excellent stats in the NY-P league according to Minorleaguebaseball, Disher lacks the type of fielding that is necessary in the big leagues. Disher also has a high strikeout rate to balance out his other positive stats. Fantasy leagues tend to focus on hitting more than other aspects, so Disher might be good for your fantasy baseball rankings. Disher also has the ability to improve, as fielding and avoiding strikeouts are common problems that players fix. Disher is somewhat of a risk for your fantasy draft.

#5 Houston Astros Rookie - Ross Seaton - Pitcher - Fantasy Baseball 2009

Ross Seaton has shown marked improvement every year since 2005. Seaton shows consistancy in his arm as well as the ability to change up speeds. Seaton would be a perfect fantasy draft choice, however his power seems to be lacking. Seaton is not likely to get many strikeouts in his 2009 season which is a strong fantasy ranking category. However, Seaton does show promise and will most likely get ample play time.
