When it comes to school supplies there are some that are a must have, and there are others that are a complete waste of money. It is important to keep in mind that not all school supplies are created equal. Some are all about the look, and others can actually do what they are made to. Below you will find a list of the top five school supplies that you kids may want, but are in fact a complete waste of money.
Jeweled Covered school supplies
You have probably seen and heard the entire jewel covered school supplies. For example staples has their own Glam Rocks collection, which is basically staplers, scissors and other supplies completely covered in little sparkles. Most of these products are reasonably priced. The problem with them is the fact that you will be getting a cheap product. The product may look nice, but it may not end up lasting you for the entire year. If you have to spend additional money on school supplies only a few months after school has started, this can really end up hurting your budget.
Fancy erasers
There are always tons of bins full of erasers. Many of them are in fancy designs, that look like something completely different than what they area. The problem with these fancy erasers is the simple fact that they do not erase anything. I made the mistake of buying these fancy cute looking erasers before, only to find that they smudge the paper and don't erase well at all. It is really better to stick with the old fashioned erasers.
Colored Glue Sticks
I realize that some may find it unusual to add glue sticks to the list of items that are a waste of money but I must say that I found them to be. Most young children like to see the glue swooshed out, and end up playing more with the glue stick, than focusing on the project itself. After working with kindergarten students and spending money on the glue sticks I learned this the hard way. The different colored glue sticks seem to really fascinate the children, and makes them play with it even more.
Style Erasers
I am sure kids love the ideas of have style erasers, but why in the world would any parent want to spend extra money on a decorated eraser. It really is a waste of money and a distraction for kids who are going to be checking out the cool designs instead of paying attention to their school work. I think that these types of erasers are better saved for a prize boxes, not for must have school supplies.
