Top Scoring NFL Teams & Championships

Historic Offenses Don't Translate to Championships

Mo Morrissey
Fans of the New England Patriots are absolutely giddy about the performance of their team in 2007. After 11 games, the Pats have scored 442 points - more than anyone else in the league. They are currently undefeated.

Would you believe that of the 100 Highest Scoring teams in the Super Bowl era (based on average points scored a game), only 17 have won the Championship. Of those 100 teams, 32 have made it to the big game. Now, admittedly some teams in the top 100 have met one another in the "Big Game:" #14, the 1998 Denver Broncos defeated #57 Atlanta Falcons; #18, the 1991 Washington Redskins defeated the Buffalo Bills; #23 the New York Jets of 1968 defeated the Baltimore Colts. See a pattern? When two offensive teams face each other, the one who scores the most tends to win.

Given that though, each one of those teams had a substantial and formidable offense whose fans had reasons to believe they could/would win it all. Just ask the 2000 St. Louis Rams who despite scoring almost 34 points a game, bowed out of the playoffs scoring 28 against the New Orleans Saints.

After the 11 games played in the 2007 season, the Patriots have scored an average of over 40 points per game, which - if that average were to hold - would by far make this team the most prolific scoring team of this era and, truly of any era. To place the Pats' scoring this season in perspective: if they were to not score a single point in the next 5 games, they would be the number 57 team (along with 6 other teams, including the 1980 edition of the Patriots).

As an aside, of the 6-teams at #57, 3 made the Super Bowl (50%), 2 won (33%) - almost exactly opposite the results of the group as a whole.

The next nearest team on that list - the 1998 Minnesota Vikings at 34.8 The highest ranking team to actually win the Super Bowl is 5 - the 1999 St. Louis Rams - and in that case, the difference was literally 1 yard between winning it all and failing at the last second. Had Kevin Dyson been successful in that last play of Super Bowl XXXIV, the highest scoring team to win the big game would have been #12 - the 1994 San Francisco 49ers.

So, IF a team is powerful enough to make the list of the 100 highest scoring teams they have a 32 percent chance of playing in the Championship game and, they have only a 52 percent chance of winning it should they get there.

Words of warning to the Patriots - the top 2 teams didn't make it and the next two lost it.

  • If the Patriots failed to score in their next 5 games, they would still rank in the top 60

I always hate it when people bring up the Kevin Dyson play against the Rams. The Titans would NOT have won the Super Bowl if Dyson would have scored. They would have tied the game with an extra point and the game would have gone to OT.

Teams will have tapes to break down the Pats, and find the holes in that run defense...they can be beat. But will they?

Offense certainly sells tickets, I know that!

I remember the 98 vikes. Their fans are still bitter.
