Top Secret!: Review of the Classic '80s Comedy Film

John Sarkis
Top Secret! Is a comedy film put together by the famous "Zucker Brothers"; the movie came out in 1984, and it's in the tradition of their previous comedy films mainly "The Kentucky Fried Movie" and "Airplane."

The cast is very versatile. There are actors in this movie (The Zucker Brothers are infamous for casting serious actors in comedic roles) that you don't oftentimes find playing comedy roles, amongst them are: Omar Sharif, Val Kilmer, and Peter Cushing...cameos abound in other "Zucker Brother" films, and this one is no exception.

Wikipedia sources say: the film was marketed with the "Movie? What Movie?"

The plot (if you can call it such; Zucker films oftentimes have little if any plot) is about a famous American pop singer: Nick Rivers (played by Val Kilmer). Nick is sent to East Germany to perform at a cultural festival, and unbeknownst to him becomes involved with a resistance movement. He helps the beautiful Hillary Flammond (played by Lucy Gutteridge) rescue her father (played by Michael Gough) a brilliant scientist whom according to the film has discovered how to produce massive quantities of salt.

The movie is a million laughs which few can resists. Amongst some of the punch lines are: the name Hillary means "she whose bosoms defy gravity." In the tradition of Zucker films, this one parodies just about every other movie under the sun. Amongst the usual suspects are: "Blue lagoon." The movie also makes fun of 80's politics to a great extend: especially communism. Sexual jokes abound in this film. Probably the funniest part of the entire film is the scene where two men disguised as a cow (in order to break into a fort) get penetrated by a bull. By the time this movies comes to a halt; just about every serious movie you'd had a high opinion of in the past comes into a new perspective.

The film is available at amazon.com, netflix.com, and just about any place that sells movie videos.
