Top Seven Desk-Less Jobs

Steve Thompson
For those who would rather run ten miles than sit for eight hours behind a desk, there are still a few career options for you. Desk-less jobs are becoming ever more popular as people realize there are ways to stay active and make a living at the same time. It might make for sore feet in the evenings, but it keeps you in shape and minimizes the paperwork. Following are my top seven desk-less jobs, in no particular order.

Desk-Less Jobs: Police Officer
When you spend most of your day directing traffic and chasing bad boys down the freeway, you're bound to get a little exercise and avoid the desk at the same time. Police officers make a good living at around $40,000, and although paperwork does come with a job, the majority of the day is spent in the field. Of course, for some law enforcement professionals, the police cruiser becomes an unofficial office.

Desk-Less Jobs: Veterinarian
Animals are pretty active creatures, which means that veterinarians must be active as well. Although most vets do have desks in their offices, they don't spend much time sitting behind them. Instead, their days are consumed with examining animals, cleaning up messes, administering medication and talking with pet owners. Large-animal veterinarians are even more active, as their work requires house calls (barn calls?)

Desk-Less Jobs: Physical Therapist
When your job is to get people up and moving again, you can't help but stay up and moving yourself. Physical therapists have largely desk-less jobs, as most of their time is divided between patients who need their assistants with re-learning how to use their muscles. The average salary for a physical therapist is around $64,000, which isn't bad for a desk-less job.

Desk-Less Jobs: Radiology Technician
Most medical professions are notoriously active, but this is especially true for radiology technicians. Their job consists of helping patients into the correct positions to take films, developing films and wheeling patients to and from their rooms. They also have to measure various body parts to ensure accurate readings. Radiology technicians make around $45,000 on average.

Desk-Less Jobs: Construction Worker
This is one of the most physically demanding jobs in the world and is certainly desk-less. Construction workers build homes, office buildings and other structures depending on the needs of the client. This career can advance into a desk job, but for those who like the sun and the activity, stay out in the field.

Desk-Less Jobs: Kindergarten Teacher
If you've ever tried to supervise a room full of six-year-olds, then you know what I'm talking about. Add teaching to the supervision, and you've got a supremely active lifestyle. Kindergarten teachers spend all day running after children intent on causing chaos, and are paid around $44,000 for their efforts. They might have a desk in the corner, but it probably doesn't get much use.

Desk-Less Jobs: Mail Carrier
If you are less concerned with activity and more inclined to enjoy the great outdoors, you might enjoy a desk-less job as a mail carrier. These professionals spend all day driving around the city in their mail trucks, bringing bills and paychecks to their neighbors. On average, mail carriers make around $40,000 per year, though it depends on experience.
