Top Seven Horror Movie Series for Your Halloween Movie Marathon

Yvonne M. Glasgow, Ph.D.
For the young and for those with children, Halloween is a time for trick or treating. For teenagers and those in their early twenties it is generally a time for costume parties and fun. But, for some of us, Halloween is also a great time to have a horror movie marathon. Sure, I love my scary movies year round, but what better way to celebrate All Hallow's Even than getting cozy, turning the lights down low and scaring your pants off? Here are my top seven choices for best Halloween movies to watch in your own spooktacular marathon!\

7. Halloween

Come on, just the name of this movie puts it on any list of Halloween must watch movies. But it is the farthest down my list because, to me, once you have seen one of them you have seen them all. In case you didn't know, Halloween is about Micheal Myers (not the comedy actor), who is some creepy guy that goes around killing people. He stalks babysitters and he is in search of his long lost sister. Musician Rob Zombie re-birthed the Halloween franchise with two new movies that give more information on Micheal and why he does what he does. Zombie's versions are much more interesting than the originals but lack that edge of your seat horror flair.

6. Final Destination

If you are looking for edge of your seat horror than this is the series to watch. These four movies may not have any masked dead men stalking teenagers, but it has something even more sinister going after them- death itself. Just because you may survive death once, or even twice, it does not mean death will not come back to get you in the end. Get scared in 3D too!

5. Friday the 13th

Jason Vorhees is like a cat with nine lives, of course he has had more than nine of them by now. With out without the hockey mask Jason strikes fear into the hearts of campers everywhere, not just at Camp Crystal Lake. Sure, his mother was the killer in the first movie but he sure does a good job on his own in all of the rest! He even meets up with another evil serial killer, Freddy Krueger, in 'Freddy Vs. Jason'.

4. Evil Dead

Join Ash in his misadventures camping when he and his friends accidentally raise an ancient evil. Funny as hell, yet scary and gory too. These three classic campy horror flicks (Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness) are sure to give you a delightful Halloween scare!

3. Scream

This was a trilogy, until now. Scream 4 is currently in the works (releasing in 2011). The original three scream movies follow Sidney Prescott and her friends and classmates who are getting picked off by a serial killer (or serial killers) known as ghost face. Sidney lost her mom and she thinks she knows who her killer is, but throughout the three movies stories change and people change, on you will be left in suspense the entire time. And if the phone rings, beware of who is on the other end of the line!

2. SAW

Jigsaw is a clever one. He kills with a method. In fact, he says he doesn't kill at all. He sets people up in elaborate puzzles and they must make sacrifices (most often other people) in order to set themselves free, or they die. Those who live tend to become his students. There is a reason he does this, but you won't find that out until about the third movie. There are currently six SAW movies, with SAW 3D on the way!

1. A Nightmare On Elm Street

Freddy Krueger is my most favorite serial killer of all time. He didn't start killing until he was already dead. And to get his victims, originally the children of the people who murdered him, he stalks them in their dreams. If you die in your dream, you are really dead. "One two Freddy's coming for you, Three four better lock your door, Five six grab your crucifix, Seven eight gonna stay up late, Nine ten never sleep again." Recently Freddy was brought back to a new generation. The original one liners of Robert Englund's Freddy got left out for a more scary version that will be sure to give you nightmares!
