Top Summer Jobs for Graduate Students

Many students like to get summer jobs to build job experience or just for some extra cash. However, unlike high school students, there are many more summer job opportunities for graduate students. That's because, first of all, they're all eighteen and older and considered adults. Second, they're considered more responsible. Here are some fun job opportunities for graduate students, the best summer jobs for grad students.
  1. Timeshare. If you're good at persuasion, you can study up on timeshare and sell condos. The only qualifications are to learn the material and then you're ready to go. Many students have started doing this as a summer job and actually began making so much money that they chose it as a career. You can find these sorts of jobs online or you can go to some condo associations and inquire about a position. Some of them will even train you, especially if you live in a highly traveled location. This is the perfect job for graduate students because you can usually set your own hours so you still have time for some researching, studying, or just hanging out. Plus, it gives you great references, work history, and help build your persuasion and communication skills.
  2. Tutoring. Tutoring is an excellent summer job for graduate students. You can tutor undergraduates or even high school students and oftentimes you can do this through your university. You usually have to be quite proficient in the area of study you wish to tutor in, though. This is a great job, however, for grad students because it helps you network within your university, among your professors, and other students. This networking could come in very handy later on down the road towards landing you a good position as well.
  3. Cruise ships. One of the best jobs, in my opinion, for graduate students is to get a summer job on a cruise ship. A lot of college students would love to travel in the summer time but most of them don't have the money to do this. If you get a job as a housekeeper, cook, or entertainer on a cruise ship, you get to travel for free and get paid to do it. How can you lose with a situation like that? The qualifications are usually just that you can perform housekeeping tasks or cooking tasks, etc. You can usually find these kinds of jobs posted around campus or even online sometimes.
  4. Camps or theme parks. Being a camp supervisor or theme park employee is also a great summer job for graduate students. Camps and theme parks, especially those of young children would much rather hire a graduate student than younger people because grads tend to be more responsible and dependable, which are usually the major qualifications. You can find these kinds of jobs online, in local newspapers, or, once again, posted around campus. These kinds of jobs also allow you to network and develop a good reference for work experience.
  5. Internships. Internships are actually probably the best summer job for graduate students because they directly prepare you for your intended career. These are sometimes rather competitive, though, because you're selected from a number of applicants. Therefore, you need to have good grades and good professor references for these types of jobs. However, if you land an internship, it will benefit you greatly both with networking and preparing you for your new career.

Those are the top five summer jobs for grad students. They are all great jobs, and any one of them would benefit a graduate student in many ways. Plus, they're good ways to make extra money in the summer.
