Top Super Bowl Commercials of All Time

It's that Time of Year Again

Arthur Kirk
It's that time of year again, time to watch the Super Bowl. This year could be like many over the past decade, in which the best part of the Super Bowl isn't the game itself, but the commercials instead. In anticipation of the upcoming commercial fest that is the Super Bowl, it is time to look back on five on the best commercials ever aired during the Super Bowl. They range from the 90's animation filled commercials, to the comical ones of the current decade.

#5: Cindy Crawford For Pepsi's New Look: Hey, come on, even you fans that enjoyed the "wardrobe malfunction" wouldn't at least put this commercial in close competition with it. I mean how likely is it that you are going to see Cindy Crawford come up to some gas station in the middle of nowhere, wearing a tank top. Pepsi's "new image" has changed even since 2004, but that image of Cindy Crawford is one many males still haven't forgotten.

#4: 1995's Original "Bud" "Weis" "Er" Frogs: Okay, yes they overmarketed the success of this commercial, but it was a cute use of the animation back in 1995. The characters went on for several years to be strong symbols of the beer. Before being replaced in the new century with Clydesdale horses that could play football. Maybe they should have the frogs come back and challenge the Clydesdale's to a game?

#3: 1993's "The Showdown" featuring Larry Bird and Magic Johnson: This was classic animation brilliance in a Super Bowl Commercial. They had great animation along with two of basketball's hottest star players competing in a game of horse. I wonder how many times after that commercial you heard kids on the playground saying "Over that second rafter, off the floor, nothing but net" as they played their own games of horse.

#2: Cat Herders: Okay, not all of these top five commercials are from many years ago. The Cat Herder one just last year by EDS truly has to be on this list due to originality. You also have to give them credit for their editing on that, getting the herders chasing the small little cats across the screen, and then seeing the cats end up crossing the water. The interviews done with a straight face were great as well, not to mention this was a one minute commercial, not just 30 seconds. So you know it had to cost some serious advertising money.

#1: Monkey With 2 Guys Clapping: Speaking of money, this is the ultimate Super Bowl commercial of all time, because it makes fun of every single Super Bowl commercial aired. All it is is two guys, both what some might call "hicks", with a Monkey. The Monkey starts a tape of cha-cha music and the three of them clap out of rhythm as the monkey dances for about 10-15 seconds. That is all there is to this commercial. Well, except for the ending graphic of "We just wasted 2 million bucks. What are you doing with your money?". This commercial was made in 2000, and really made fun of all the money some of the dot com companies through out there in advertising in the years leading up to it. You will also notice that none of those commercials even made the top five. It is just the perfect satirical Super Bowl commercial and is why it is number one on the list.

There will be many commercials shown during this year's Super Bowl as well. Will any of them jump into the top five list of all time for Super Bowl Commercials? Well, that is up to you to decide.

  • Super Bowl commercials cost a huge amount of money just for 30 seconds.
  • The 90's featured a lot of animated commercials during the Super Bowl.
  • In this century, commercials have started to lean towards more comical attempts.
Three other commercials were very close to making the list, and maybe should have. They included the Zebra referee, Clydesdales playing football, and "the streaker" sheep.
