10. Top Cat
Top Cat was the head of a gang of New York alley cats in this Hanna-Barbera cartoon that ran in prime time for two seasons in 1961 and 1962. Always looking to make a quick buck, Top Cat was always getting into run-ins with the police.
9. Felix the Cat
Whenever he gets into a fix, he reaches into his bag of tricks. Felix the Cat began during the silent era and became the first animated character to draw audiences based on his star power. Felix the Cat was one of the most popular "performers" in silent film, but by the sound era, his popularity was fading. The team who created Felix, Pat Sullivan and Otto Messmer, enjoyed tremendous success with the animated cat, who appeared in comic strips as well as animated shorts. Felix the Cat's star faded throughout the 1930's, but then in 1953, Joe Oriolo introduced Felix to television. The newly retooled Felix became a celebrity all over again for a new generation. Oriolo was responsible for introducing Felix's Magic Bag of Tricks.
8. Si and Am - The Siamese Cats from Lady and the Tramp
We are Siamese if you please. These two mischievous cats are even Siamese if you don't please. The cats are Aunt Sarah's pride and joy and would never do anything wrong. Yeah, right. The song they sing was written and performed by Peggy Lee.
If you are fans of Si and Am, you can check out their fan listing HERE.
7. Thomas O'Malley from The Aristocats
The Aristocats was the last feature approved for production by Walt Disney himself and was the first one completed after Disney's death. O'Malley the alley cat comes to the rescue of a pampered housecat set to inherit a fortune. O'Malley was the Fonz of his day.
6. Heathcliff
Heathcliff is a crass, smart-alecky cat with a love of seafood and his girlfriend Sonja. Debuting in 1973 as a comic strip by George Gately, Heathcliff became a short-lived animated series from 1980-1982. He appeared in an animated movie in 1985.
5. Scratchy from "The Itchy and Scratchy Show" on The Simpsons
Star of the hyper-violent show within a show, Scratchy is Bart and Lisa Simpson's favorite feline.
4. Stimpy from The Ren and Stimpy Show
You eediot! How dare you rate Stimpy number four on the list! Part of the gross-out humor team of Ren and Stimpy, Stimpy was the not-so-bright, eternally optimistic half of the team. Stimpy's full name was Stimpson J. Cat. The pair were originally created by John Kricfalusi in 1979.
The Ren and Stimpy Show pushed the boundaries of acceptability. The series ran on Nickelodeon from 1991 to 1996. In 1993, Kricfalusi was fired for pushing the boundaries a bit too far.
3. Sylvester the Cat
Thuferin' thuccotash! A cat with a lisp may not be politically correct, or even in good taste, but he was funny. Always trying to catch that cute, adorable Tweety, Sylvester was the original "puddy tat." He was voiced by Mel Blanc, who later was also the voice of Heathcliff.
2. Garfield
Created by cartoonist Jim Davis in 1977, Garfield is one of the best-known cats in the world. Syndicated in over 2000 newspapers, Garfield has appeared in every form of media - from television to movies. Of course who can forget all those suction-cup Garfields in car windows?
Davis grew up on a farm with 25 cats and named his most famous cat after his grandfather, James A. Garfield Davis. Lasagna, anyone?
1. Tom from Tom and Jerry
If you think that cats should be seen and not heard, then Tom is the choice for you. Tom and Jerry was MGM's answer to the popular Warner Brothers' Looney Tunes. Created by Hanna and Barbera, Tom and Jerry debuted in 1939. With its slapstick humor and simple stories, they've been going ever since. In 1965 Chuck Jones (of Bugs Bunny fame) took over for Hanna/Barbera.
